I was never taught how to care for my thick, curly hair, and I am still learning. My brown eyes made me feel outcast from the rest of my family. I even went out of my way to avoid ever becoming tanned because it was ingrained in me that only pale was beautiful.

There were many instances in my life where both my parents enforced not just white supremacy, but a rather "aryan" beauty standard. It was because of this that I grew up insecure about my features.

My indigenous heritage came from my grandfather, and a lot of that culture was lost with my mother. She and I are also German on my grandmother's side. Ever since I was little, she'd made "jokes" about how the Nazis would've liked her for being a blonde-haired, blue-eyed woman.

I understand a lot of this sentiment. Even now, I am hesitant to call myself biracial, as I have no idea if I count, and for many years I even told myself my mother made it up. She is also incredibly racist despite also being mixed indigenous.
