97% survival rate. So 3% fatality rate even with treatment, assuming for today we don't run short of antibiotics. So that'd be, what, 200 million deaths? More than Covid, Spanish Flu and the First World War put together. That sounds kind of bad?

I note the Senator is also prefacing the name of the country with the definite article - a well documented tell for querying its sovereignty. I do not believe he is a stupid man, so, is he parroting Kremlin talking points because he really believes them, or for some other motivation?

One of many reasons the Vic/Oz greens lost me some years ago.

Mine is paid for three hours. As far as I'm aware she doesn't shower while here, but she does short change me on the hours when we're not in. She thinks I don't know. I do know; the Arlo doorbell timestamps her arrival and departure. But as long as she does the job, I don't mind (much).

Were the Goods unmarried and merely cohabiting? Seems unlikely given they'd assumed a common surname. I see Becca Good is referred to as Renee Good's partner rather than her wife. Does Minnesota not recognise same sex marriage in this context?

Curious that the brother of the late Mrs Good is appointed trustee for her next of kin / estate, rather than the surviving spouse. The document also mentions her children, parents and siblings as next of kin, not her widow.

Does this go nuclear? And do we escalate or do they? We'll have to wait for the next episode to find out. (Our conventional weakness may mean we have few options if allies fail to support us...)

I thought it might grow on me - it wouldn't be the first time I've instinctively disliked a change simply because of the cognitive bias in favour of what I know. But their treatment of respected community leaders is shocking.

I don't have the time or inclination to do a deep dive i to the data governance issue, but what I do know is (1) the new interface is awful, (2) respected community leaders whose views I trust are up in arms and (3) Recon is responding to (2) by banning them. I've deactivated rather than deleted.

Vaughan B-W @vaughanbw.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
This is actually quite an interesting point. So is it Recon's position that by putting pics in your gallery you've chosen to make them public? Let us know where you get to with the ICO.

Vaughan B-W @vaughanbw.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Pains me to say it because I've had a lot of fun on and through Recon and its themed predecessors over the past 25 odd years, but think I'm done. I can forgive the new interface being awful. I can't forgive this.

'Illegal' is generally considered to mean a violation of the law, not a breach of a websites terms and conditions. Are you trying to alienate the communities you claim to serve?

Banning diesel exports will not help. It would lower the price somewhat in Texas and the Midwest, but drastically push it up everywhere else, including the Northeast and US West Coast.

Courts are incredibly slow to do that, at least here. They generally take the view that a public judgment that records the fact of the contempt is enough. In fact, you might enjoy this one - the fury of the judge leaps off the page! tinyurl.com/3xc8t425

(2/2) ... without putting global oil prices through the roof. It had the side effect of enriching India at the expense of Russia while still keeping diesel made from Russian crude by Indian refineries available to Europe and elsewhere. Which we could live with.
010
Vaughan B-W @vaughanbw.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Of course, Russian refineries having these unfortunate accidents does mean Russia has more crude available to export - since it isn't in a position to refine its own crude. One of the reason to target sanctions on product rather than crude was to squeeze Russia... (1/2)
110
Vaughan B-W @vaughanbw.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
It's a bit more nuanced than that because Russia could sell its diesel to China, India, et al - if it had any to sell. It's a comparatively minor factor in what we're seeing, but there's a kernel of validity in it.

Thomas, Alito and Roberts are all on the wrong side of seventy. There has to be a decent chance the next Dem President replaces at least one of them (and Sotomayor). Unless of course the red team keeps the Senate in November and Trumpty Dumpty gets to replace them.
000
Vaughan B-W @vaughanbw.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
NB - this might be a good time to recall that Trump purported to retrospectively un-pardon some people on the basis Biden had signed the pardons with an autopen and/or had not known or approved of the documents purportedly signed in his name.
011
Vaughan B-W @vaughanbw.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
At some point SCOTUS is going to have to explore the limits of the pardon power. Can a President pardon himself on the way out the door? Can he pardon a co-conspirator? Can a pardon be voided for bad faith / improper purpose / bribery type reasons? All this and more from January 2029.

Ohio has gone pretty red of late too, but does seem to be in play this time (maybe down to candidate quality). I'm old enough to remember when Obama won both Florida and Ohio, twice.

Vaughan B-W @vaughanbw.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Yeah. NH hasn't been polled that much and Sununu is popular. Collins also has a history of coming from behind in Maine. But Ohio and Texas looking good. No chance Florida is in play?

Merely saying 'if elected, I will pursue Policy X, which will result in every household benefiting to the tune of £Y', isn't bribery, is it?
000
Vaughan B-W @vaughanbw.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Yeah I mean leaving to one side that the Treasury hasn't got a trillion dollars, I cant see this is all that different to 'no tax on tips' or 'if elected I'll build this road'. As opposed to paying inducements to individual voters.

000
Vaughan B-W @vaughanbw.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Does this count, though? Isn't there a difference between offering something to a particular voter (to vote, or to vote in a particular way) and saying 'if I win, I will do X?'. I'm not an American lawyer, but I suspect this is on the right side of the fuzzy line.
110
Vaughan B-W @vaughanbw.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Is it actually blatantly illegal? How is it different from any other election commitment, like a tax cut or saying he'll build a wall on the Mexican border? Isn't the bigger problem that it would cost a trillion dollars?
