An account from a Ukrainian soldier. He and 6 comrades were tasked with holding the line while everyone else retreated, a suicide mission. Every man in the photo accepted their inevitable deaths, they knew they'd die before their mission was complete. But somehow they all survived that night.

In the photo — seven scouts. The morning after breaking out of encirclement. A simple order: hold the positions last, while the battalion withdrew. We knew it was most likely a one-way ticket.

As we sat in the dugout waiting for the end, a silence pressed on our chests. We understood this was the end, because the longer we held, the tighter the encirclement closed — but we stayed silent. I still remember that look from my brother-in-arms. In it was an awareness of the end. It seemed to say: "It's over, but we're here, together." It was the look of people who had fought for one another and were ready to face death together.

The line between life and death became as thin as paper. It felt like the whole world had gone quiet, as if the war itself had paused to let me be alone with my thoughts. The warmest moments flashed before my eyes. I thought of my sister, my aunt, my uncle, my wife, my child... I thought: "There's so much I never got to tell them, so much I still haven't done." And then came the most terrifying realization — the world existed without you, and would go on existing calmly, all the same.

That thought was frightening, but at the same time it held a strange, bitter freedom. The freedom of the absolute limit, when you inwardly accept your own end.

That night, we made it out. All seven of us, without a single death. But that feeling still follows me — the feeling of something already finished, the feeling of the last battle. We came out of there alive, but that experience permanently changed the lens through which I see life. Part of my mind, I think, is still trying to grasp the fact that after that inevitable "end," a tomorrow still came for us... a tomorrow where we would keep fighting, keep dying, and would no longer greet the dawn together... A few days later "Artist" was killed, and then, one by one, of that seven, I was left alone in the unit.

Glory to the Nation, which fights for every one of its mornings.
Glory to the Heroes. To those who made it out that day, and to those who remained in formation forever.
