I have pointed out since: no, we actually didn't. his 'dipshit son' was senator and ran an influence-selling counter inside his dad's presidency. nothing happened to him. a mix of immunity and 'he didn't actually know/participated in the coup'. can't remove just a 'little bit of the cancer'

this was difficult to read, but it's important to know people are currently in prison for 50+ years for attending a protest + one wasn't even at the protest, but got sentenced for 30 years for "concealing" anarchist zines

maybe I'm off base here, but I feel like there's starting to be rumblings of an idea that anyone who liked - or even didn't outright hate - Goodbye Lara's ending is toxic and I'm really hoping I'm wrong on this

the way r/anime is reeling over the sayolara ending AND the fact mushoku tensei's at the top not just of the subreddit's timeline today but of all their rankings is proof and parcel that reddit is a dogshit website

I suppose the ending might align more with this take from the user daxwrong on the subreddit. (they're very right, imo, but could Koide and Kawahara have chosen a less painful way to say it lol)

Lara's light in the end was more a will to live and grow- a revelation she found through her love for Mari. It was different from the other princesses lights because it wasn't through a romantic love for one person. That's why the symbol of the hot chocolate can was so important... It was a vessel used to nurture and grow 2 flowers. Through their love, Lara escapes oppressive expectations from both her family and the narrative and ventures off to chase her own light. Mari's expression at the end, and the absence of a "goodbye, lara" shows love and trust- she knows in her heart without doubt that it's not a forever goodbye. They still have their promise, and Lara said she meant it when she said she wanted to live with Mari. It's a bittersweet tone because growing, living, loving, and being human is painful, but it is important work. It's painful to be apart, but Lara needs and wants to learn how to stand on her own two feet. And for the first time ever, she's allowed to.

I would have loved to see more affection between the 2 but this really was the most realistic and inevitable ending. They're both 15, and have hardly lived. From the beginning, the show set out to deconstruct the kinds of fairytale stories that resist challenging endings. I think watching the show with only shipping in mind is a bit antithetical to that. Like, what else could have happened? They kiss, become girlfriends, marry, live together from age 15 forever till they die? This was lampshaded a few times. Lara was already under immense pressure to do all of that to save her family, and it was genuinely torturing her.

mii!lara from goodbye lara shoves a flower bouquet in mii!mari's face, asking her "Will you marry me?"

close up of mii!mari responding "Yes! A squillion times, yes!"

still from the two girl's wedding, a picture of them in wedding dresses to the right. amongst the audience we can see mii!konata and mii!kagami from lucky star. below is a subtitle from a song lyric: "We wish you a rosy future together!"
