Thanks to a reader tonight for showing me their Annihilation tattoo and telling me it's their favorite novel. Means a lot. And thanks Portland in general. (Terrible with names alas.)

a lily like flower with stalk tattoo on their wrist and hand.

I made a playlist for the studio of some of my favorite songs that aren't rock... It ended up being a lot of country ballads! People seem to enjoy this one, so I thought I'd share here for y'all. Some yearning & wistful favs... open.spotify.com/playlist/26m...

Coral snake freehand for Patrick. This one took about 4.5 hours to tattoo and an hour or so to draw on. #portlandtattoo #pdxtattoo #snaketattoo

Hard to explain.. it's like a little rubber pouch with a slit in it, and the slit only opens when you squeeze it

I’m going to Mardi Gras in New Orleans again this year- here’s some 35mm photographs I took on my Olympus OM10 back in 2012, on my first trip to New Orleans.

Here’s a custom tattoo design for a client that I got excited about and decided to color for fun. It’s a selkie playing an Irish flute! I have prints available at www.inprnt.com/gallery/vall... #selkie #selkietattoo #illustration

A selkie, a half seal, half human creature from Irish folklore- plays an Irish flute while perched on jagged gray rocks encrusted with white and purple barnacles. She is surrounded by a border of green kelp. A calm ocean is behind her. Water ripples around the base of the rocks. She has long, wavy, dark red hair, and freckles on her pale peach skin. Her flute is long and black with 6 holes and no keys. She emerges from a seal skin that appears to still be alive and moving, because it is a part of her. The seal skin is brown with a lighter brown belly and dark spots on its back. The deal’s head rests on the woman’s head like a hat, and its flipper hugs her body. Her breasts are hidden by her arm and hair.

European starling and milk thistles. This is a custom design for a chest & collarbone tattoo I’ll be starting tomorrow… I’ll be freehanding the rest of the thistles.

A black and white illustration of a European starling with its wings spread, flanked on each side by nearly symmetrical milk thistles.

Birds are one of my favorite subjects. I have so much fun tattooing them- there’s something really satisfying about drawing feathers. Here’s a few examples of some birds I’ve done. I can’t remember which were freehanded- maybe just the cormorant.

A photo of an all black ink tattoo of an anhinga (a type of sea bird). Its wings stretch from the top of the person’s hip and across their upper thigh onto the front of their thigh. The bird is covered in many spiky back feathers, it faces away from us, and has a snake-like neck in an s-curve pointing up toward the person’s belly. It’s wings are black and speckled.

A photo of a tattoo in all black ink depicting two ravens fighting over a ring filling the length of a person’s outer right calf. The ring is between them, locked in one of each of their talons. One raven is upside down, both have their mouths open as if they are squawking at each other, and a broken necklace tumbles in the air between them.

A photo of a tattoo in all black ink of a cormorant on the back of a person’s thigh. The bird is mostly black, with sharp, almost decorative triangle patterns on its feathers. It faces away from us so we see the back of its wings. It blasts over an old tattoo of a red circle.

A photo of a small tattoo in all black ink depicting a Philippine eagle on someone’s arm. The bird is diving downwards with a serious expression and outstretched talons. It’s wings are banded.

Some favorite dragons, some freehanded, some not.

A photo of a toothy western style dragon tattoo in all black ink on a person’s thigh, stretching from upper hip to just below the knee. The dragon’s wings are tattered and its tail coils just above the knee.

A photo of a tattoo in all black ink depicting a dragon with horns and tattered wings on a person’s bicep. The dragon’s tail wraps around the bicep. The dragon's mouth is open like it is about to blow fire toward the gothic window next to it. The window part of the tattoo wraps and is hard to see in this photo.

A photo of a tattoo in all black ink depicting two dragons biting each other on a person’s chest. They only have one set of legs each. They have simple, small wings and donkey-like ears. One dragon bites the other’s wing, while the other bites the other’s neck. Three swords pierce the dragons in combat, crossing in the center of the tattoo.

A photo of a large tattoo in all black ink depicting a dragon with black wings flying or crawling down a person’s ribs. Smoke and thorny vines tangle in the background. The dragon’s tail curls up and over the person’s nipple, and the lowest vine stretches below the person’s hip.

Here’s some favorites from the archives.

An alligator tattoo in all black ink stretching from a person’s upper thigh, across their rib cage, and ending just under the armpit. The alligator’s mouth is closed, but its teeth protrude from its jaw. It looks like it is crawling down the person’s body.

A hawk tattoo in all black ink soars down a person’s upper thigh and hip. It has banded patterns in its wings, and its mouth is opened in a scream. Its talons are out, like it is about to scoop up prey.

A full back tattoo in all black ink of a snake weaving through blackberry leaves and fruits and flowers.

So, I guess we’re starting over. My name’s AB, I’m a trans nonbinary tattoo artist based in Portland, OR, and I’ve been tattooing since 2013. I love tattooing animals and mythological creatures, and doing custom & freehand tattoos that fit and flow with the body. Crossing my fingers this app sticks!

A color photo of a white, trans-masculine person with red hair, facial piercings, freckles, a face tattoo, and neck tattoos wearing a black beanie and a band t-shirt. Monochrome doodles of birds and a landscape with a road, hills, and clouds lay over the photo.
