Looking across at the venue I'm speaking at feels like the scene in a video game where the title card comes up introducing the boss battle. On Saturday I'll be on stage giving my first conference talk across the Matagarup Bridge at Optus Stadium.
A bright, illuminated bridge that coils into the sky in front of a massive stadium. It is reflected in a river. In the foreground is me beside my unicycle.

It doesn't matter. Regardless of how long you wait or how you plan it, the first place will accept the idea the moment after you pitch it elsewhere.

I have to agree. There might be a few niche situations where it is useful, but in most cases we'll still have to use JavaScript, which is what most people are doing now anyway. The code will at least be a tad simpler, I suppose. Seems like a half-baked implementation.

I love slipping little things that that in when I'm writing. Such dynamism is something only really possible when the web is your publication target, so I make use of it when I can.

It makes me feel so deeply sad to see AI pull requests against PersonalSit.es. Often times they're submitting AI-generated sites, too. Just the complete antithesis of the point.

px in CSS ≠ a pixel on a display. This is something that is obvious when you think about it at all, but many people seem to gloss over it. I was explaining it to someone and figured I'd be best to jot it down: vale.rocks/micros/20260...

My hammer went rogue and started smashing people's heads in! There was nothing I could do. I tried to stop it, but my arm kept swinging it at people. It isn't my fault! It is the hammer's. This is very dangerous. Someone should regulate hammers. (This is a post about AI safety and liability.)

Unless Halo under Activision reviews extraordinarily well and is free of predatory monetisation strategies, I probably won't play any future games in the series. Despite my love for the games, this is likely the killing blow for any excitement I had for future entries. Dreadful. #Halo #Activision

Thanks for linking this. I can follow what the article is trying to say a bit better with this as context. I still find it very weird how the content seems to be presented and written, however. Perhaps because of the framing provided by the title (which the author likely didn't choose)?

Vale @vale.rocks · 21/09/2026
Perhaps it is partially difference of interpretation and culture? I'm sure there are some sick tech bros out there with twisted gender-based language categorisations that play into some twisted worldview.

Vale @vale.rocks · 21/09/2026
This is the bit that gets me. The tech sphere's mistreatment, underpayment, and under-acknowledgement of women is sickening and horrifically ingrained and far reaching. This framing of CSS however is new to me and the argument seems rather weirdly presented and asserted.

Vale @vale.rocks · 21/09/2026
I'd be interested to read your perspective. Mistreatment of women across the tech industry is forever disgusting and always atrocious. However, what I find most peculiar about this article in particular is the feminine framing of CSS itself. It just seems forced and contrived in presentation.

Vale @vale.rocks · 21/09/2026
This is an extremely odd article from WIRED. It almost seems to be trying to fabricate some sort of culture war around CSS? Bizarre.

If ever you search for a song or musical artist on Bluesky, you're likely to find the results flooded with automated accounts which post whenever a song is played by a specific radio station. I find this noise rather annoying, so have compiled this moderation list for easily muting them.

The man with motor neurone disease I mentioned in this article died today. As someone whose independance and agency was a huge part of his identity, assistive technologies made the final chapter of his life that little bit more bearable. Once again, accessibility matters.

I thought about dropping an addendum into my last post to say just how overwhelmed I am, in the best possible way, by the way all of you in the front-end community have shown up to show support, both for me and for CSS-Tricks. I started to do that but then felt a new post...

You’ll miss publishers when they’re gone
Ever since Piccalilli started to get traction, I’ve always seen CSS-Tricks, Smashing Magazine and A List Apart (among others) as peers. We all help each other behind the scenes and importantly, back each other. When CSS-Tricks was initially acquired by DigitalOcean, I was really happy for Chris. The work that he’d put into that publication…

I'm CSS-only for the most part. Only time I fall to preprocessors is when I'm working in legacy contexts or when I'm working on projects already using preprocessors.

I love the CSS spec's take on supporting `text-decoration: blink`. It may as well say, 'Support it, don't support it, nobody here gives a shit. Probably don't make stuff blink though. We all know what a mess `<blink>` was.' (Even before deprecation, none of the major browsers supported the value.)
