I believe it still has to get federal approval, is that correct? I’m not familiar with the NSW system so I don’t know how it got approved under the circumstances. Would like more detail. Is there any hope it won’t get through fed process?

If you’re considered ‘strong’ (like Hanson-Young or Faruqi) you won’t get leadership. If you’re considered too ‘strong’ (possibly even ‘aggressive’) like Alex Bhathal or me, you’ll get excluded. it’s all sad and predictable #Feminism #Patriarchy #Politics

As someone who was banned from the Greens at least in part because I was making too much fuss about feminist causes (in their eyes) - it’s a pattern. They prefer women who are conventionally feminine in style, but even then they won’t fully support them

Val team earth @valakay.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I am personally not surprised that Steph Hodgins-May supported this. In my dealings with her, she came across as a ‘so-called’ feminist who is actually more concerned about her own success than the success of women in general

Val team earth @valakay.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
It’s disappointing that the Greens have once again given short shrift to a female leader. Larissa Waters wouldn’t have been my pick, but if they wanted a ‘stronger’ style leader, I think Faruqi or Hanson-Young would be fine. Like Labor, they revert to patriarchal stereotypes under pressure #AusPol

Yep the Northern hemisphere is getting hot. Posted previously about one of my tennis friends saying she wouldn’t go to Europe in summer - “too hot” - which from an Australian, even a Melburnian, I thought was striking. But who knows what our summer will hold? Vic almost reached 50C last summer

Dr Flowers is now saying that the problem is riding on the highway rather than not having a basket, which is fair enough, but in fairness to me, that wasn’t clear in his previous post. Anyway glad you enjoyed mine 😀

I find this statement quite intriguing as someone who is 78, car free, and does all my shopping, goes to tennis, etc etc on a pedal bike. Do you not have a basket or what?

Thousands of people died in directly climate change-related disasters this year in Europe, Nepal and elsewhere. In Australia, we’ve also had climate disasters, though generally with loss of life, but I am also talking here about more insidious losses.

Last year, the beaches of my childhood were not safe for swimming because of an algal bloom related to ocean warming. Millions of sea creatures died. This year, the low-lying snowfield where my children learned to ski had almost no snow.

Val team earth @valakay.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Most winters of my children’s childhood, we would drive a couple of hours to the nearest snowfield. My children would vie to be the first to see the snow. I am effortless in the ocean, my children are effortless on the snow. All this is being stolen from us.

I grew up on the Fleurieu peninsula, Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri country. My children grew up in the hills near Melbourne, near the border of Bunurong/Wurundjerri country. Every summer, my family would go to the beach for a holiday. As we drove, we children would vie to be the first to see the sea

Treating veganism as a minority special interest or even a joke, is a way for some climate activists to perform that they’re relatable. they’re normal, one of the gang. It’s time to stop doing that and start treating veganism seriously

Climate scientists are having debates on Bluesky about how we respond to overshoot and how best to get back to 1.5C or less. in spite of differences, it’s clear rapid reductions in methane need to be part of this So I ask all climate activists to stop treating veganism as ‘out there’ or ‘foolish’.

My experience with Greens here is they have a habit of treating people badly and then finding it impossible to acknowledge or resolve This spreads ripples of distrust into the community. In my case I’ve tried repeatedly to resolve this, but the party seems sadly unable to do so

Yes I don’t like to say too much but I worked with someone from BoM in a former job - v good at what they did but v cautious about political statements - preferred to work ‘inside the tent’. As someone working in public health, i found this a bit frustrating. Former CEO sounds 😳

I worked in public health for years - in spite of its limitations, it’s accepted that advocacy is a legitimate part of the work. I wish other disciplines would accept that.

Val team earth @valakay.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
My explanation of this is that because summer was hot, they experience winter as relatively cold. In reality, both are hotter than they used to be. We need repeated, very clear evidence from BoM and govt to educate people about this, but I’m not seeing it.

Val team earth @valakay.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Repeating my informal observation that most people don’t ‘experience’ climate change, they experience relatively hot or cold weather - judging from the number of people who have told me that this last winter has been ‘cold’.

i don’t know why women continue to let men run the world. Is it fear, or some kind of collective delusion (not involving all women, but a significant number), or a feeling that it can’t be changed so may as well just put up with it?

It is frightening how much support there is for ON. I’ve read lots of analysis but I still don’t get it. What is it that people think they will get from voting ON? Seems like ON and Reform are promising people that they can return to the security of childhood, some sort of past version of Australia

Quite a few people have talked to me about ‘how cold it is this winter’ - I think they don’t get that it’s relative, we had a hot summer so winter feels relatively cold. The human capacity to adapt is impressive but it can also conceal reality from people

Val team earth @valakay.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
Yes there is a bit of that here too, including for older people who live alone. I hadn’t thought of that thing about not being able to get out but that is scary. OOH they can leave their windows a bit open at night which is handy in hot weather

Val team earth @valakay.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
I understand what you mean because people also generalise about Australia, whereas there’s a lot of regional difference say between inner city Melbourne and a country town in Queensland. But I was shocked by those signs, I’d never seen them anywhere else
120
Val team earth @valakay.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
I saw those signs in San Diego which I don’t think is particularly conservative by US standards right? And yes the police are a big problem but my point was that US householders are paranoid as well - having signs on houses that say ‘armed response’ is not normal in other parts of the world.
110
Val team earth @valakay.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
The issue is ‘could theoretically have happened any time’ vs ‘more likely to happen at this time because of global warming’. I’ll leave that with you.
000
Val team earth @valakay.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
Maybe ‘Americans’ are paranoid? One thing that shocked me on my only visit to the USA was the houses with signs on them saying ‘armed response’. I have lived in and visited quite a few countries and that is not normal. Most people don’t live their lives like that.

Val team earth @valakay.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
Don’t you think that the fact that it appears unprecedented (in your own words) is worth reflecting on? If it is significantly worse than such events have been, that is more likely to mean it is related to climate change. No one is feeling good or being smug - they are trying to warn people
