I don't think there's anything necessarily odd about not wanting to be reminded of an unpleasant experience. US journalist Mike Royko was the inspiration for a movie character, and after watching it described a scene where things went badly as "so grimly realistic I almost left the theater."

I think it actually began as a right-wing thing, half of whom thought they were Owning The Libs by changing a "beloved" character from their canonically white male original concept and the other half of whom had no prior exposure to tsundere ecchi and so were utterly defenseless before it.

Lots of cryptids, like the Hodag, the Beasts of Busco and Bray Road, phantom kangaroos, and the Loveland Frog-Man. The legend of St. Urho is a distinctively Midwestern thing and while that's for a different holiday season, the real Ed Gein, Jeff Dahmer and H.H. Holmes are perfect for Halloween.

In honor of scary movie month, the first movie I can remember being scared of as a kid. (I never even saw the movie! The poster was enough to frighten me!)

On my doctor's advice, I made an appointment this afternoon with a dermatologist to get a routine skin screening. The first available appointment is in May 2027. Boy, am I glad I don't live in a country with socialized medicine where people face lengthy waits to see a specialist!

I think this relates to a generally declining ability to grasp abstractions, which I blame for the growing denial in the US that abstract ideas like the Constitution can be the basis for a nation and the embrace of a (historically incoherent) “blut und boden” nationalism as a replacement.

TIL that there's a new Southeastern University. (The original Southeastern University, located in my neighborhood, shut its doors in 2009. Coincidentally enough given today's date, it was an indirect casualty of 9/11--SEU relied heavily on foreign students, who faced lots of new paperwork.)
