We're interested in starting to try to document the implications of living in the world we do today--where most of the policy recommendations that fall out of our models may not be en acted. Why? And what does that mean for our economy?

🗣️We're starting a reading group! 🗣️ Hello #EconSky! Pedro Oliboni & I are on the hunt for other folks interested in the intersection of political economy and macroeconomics. Interested? DM me!
The Political Macroeconomy Reading Group, organized by Pedro Oliboni (University of Chicago) and Vaasavi Unnava (Ohio State), explores how together private (market) choice and public (government) choice determine macroeconomic outcomes. The group engages with positive, normative, empirical, and theoretical questions. Broadly, we are interested in “endogenizing” public policy, comparing institutions, and whether normative economics is possible under rational expectations. Specifically, we will study issues from dynamic legislative bargaining and redistributional conflict to the interaction between political cycles and macroeconomic fluctuations. Readings span from classical works like Becker and Stigler to modern heterogenous-agent and political selection models by Acemoglu, Azzimonti, and Rios-Rull. We are actively looking for macroeconomics PhD students, candidates, and interested faculty with research interests in political economy who are looking to join for regular meetings to advance our work, collaborate, and learn from whoever else is working in this area.

I understand why people vote the way they do. I do wish turnout was better, but I can't blame individuals who are distrustful of broad statements of economic recovery, given the grocery hauls they have.

(as an aside, try telling PhD students that their raises for stipends mean anything in real terms, given inflation. it hasn't moved anyone I know in the linguistics department)

I don't blame the Dems here. If I'm running an incumbent, I can't say the economy is a failure. But someone else can, and they can implicitly & explicitly promise to keep wages high.

I don't think things are as confusing as we think they are. If my wages haven't risen, can I still keep believing in the promises of liberalism? What if my wages are my only, unstable income?

People pan-ethnically mobilize when they have stable employment -- yet, when they are at risk of losing a job, they are in competition with other ethnic groups in their job class. This seems to be partially confirmed by Autor et al 2020, which relates globalization & pol polarization.

in competition w consumption. I don't think that's the full story. Institutional capture means that identity also distorts prices. Of course, when everyone's winning, that's not a huge deal. But Matsuoka shows a strong relationship between intergroup competition & expected wages.

Sure, there are psychological components of identity too, but communities offer economic protections. Okamoto writes about the emergence of biological essentialism as a way to justify slavery & the pittance paid to asian laborers. Much of our own field treats identity as a good people must choose

(a bit). Social identity theory is a major way of describing why people subscribe to in-group/out-group discrimination. Tajfel & Turner are the OGs: they show that even sorting people into arbitrary groups results in them distorting resource allocations in favor of their own group.

There are a lot of great authors doing awesome work in econ, poli sci, anthro, and psych. Much of it contends with the relationship between identity, economics, and populism. In our field, the main question is "Why do people vote against their economic interests?" Tbh, I think the premise is wrong--

With my mass following (& getting some hi's back!) I thought I'd break my infrequent joke posting. I study the relationship between politics & the macroeconomy (not normal #EconSky material ik). My most current research is on populism & its macro implications--trying to answer "Why did he win?" 1/n

I went to OSU for undergrad, and what's wild to me is that while I was there, an anti-abortion protest set up shop, blocked a large walking path, and littered the area with graphic photos of fetal remains and not once did the school give a shit about it
