Choosing between groceries and your electric bill shouldn't be a monthly survival game. Washington needs to wake up and treat utility affordability like the crisis it is.

Fact: Electric bills have outpaced inflation for years. Fact: 1 in 3 US households are struggling to pay for energy bills. Fact: Utility companies are making record profits off your electric bill. Your crisis is their bottom line.

🚨NC regulators blocked Duke Energy's gas plant meant to cover surging AI data center demand because Duke couldn't prove customers wouldn't end up on the hook for the bill. Utilities think they can keep using the AI boom to pickpocket you. Nice try.

About 70% of Americans have zero choice in who provides their electricity. You can’t shop around for a better deal or switch providers when rates go up. You’re simply captive to a for-profit monopoly that makes more money the more expensive their infrastructure gets.

Utility Action Alliance @utility-action.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
If you overspend your budget, you go broke. If a monopoly utility overspends their budget, they ask the state for a rate hike and get a bonus. Must be nice.

Utility Action Alliance @utility-action.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Your reminder that monopoly utilities are using the AI data center surge as an excuse to build massive, costly new power plants, and sticking YOU with the tab. They’re quietly raising rates on working families just to lock in guaranteed profits and subsidize Big Tech. bit.ly/47ktbFX

The Monopoly That’s Really Driving Up Your Electric Bill

Average utility costs jumped 5.3% year over year, outpacing standard energy inflation, and a new BofA report says not to expect that trend to reverse anytime soon.
This graphic features a Yahoo Finance article headline that states, "Utility bills are rising faster than inflation, BofA says. Expect higher prices long-term." The author is Brooke DiPalma, a senior reporter, and the article was published on September 7, 2023. The headline box is on a blue background with the logo for Utility Action Alliance. at the bottom.

Utilities spend millions convincing you that rate hikes are inevitable and your voice doesn't matter. Both of those are lies. Neither would be worth spending millions on if they were true.

$186,000,000,000. That's the combined profit 110 investor-owned electric utilities posted from 2021 to 2024. That's enough money to give every household in America more than $1,300 to help cover essentials like groceries, rent, & gas at the pump.

Trump is out here promising Americans a $5,000 check if the GOP keeps control of Congress. Here's a better idea: do your job and bring down energy costs so we don't need a handout to survive our bills.

Quick reminder: ➡️ Utilities disconnected residential electric service 13.5 million times for unpaid bills in 2024. ➡️ That same year, the industry posted record profits. Nobody should have to accept that as normal.

DTE Energy is asking customers for another $474 million just months after a nearly $250 million rate increase took effect, and about $100 million of it is just to boost shareholder returns. Enough is enough.

AES Indiana customers shouldn't have to pay for risky utility investments or corporate deals. As regulators take a second look at AES Indiana's rate hike, they must put affordability first. Ratepayers deserve reliable power—not higher bills to support speculative demand & corporate deals.

Utility Action Alliance @utility-action.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
3 things utilities don’t want you to know: 🏛️ Your energy bills can fund lobbying against policies that could lower costs. 🤥 They spend big to make endless rate hikes seem normal. 💰 Those higher rates help boost profits for Wall Street shareholders. Sounds fair.

2025 marked the 14th straight year of record utility construction spending. To no one's surprise, utilities make big profits by spending big on construction. But there’s more: utilities plan to spend another $1.33 TRILLION over the next 4 years. All paid for by customers (meaning us).
