Nick Mowbray posted on LinkedIn a few days ago about "the criticism we receive for donating to National and ACT" I'd be curious to know what source of criticism he's referring to that apparently struck enough of a nerve that he compelled to write a whole post
A screenshot of a LinkedIn post from Nick Mowbray that says:

I'm aware of the criticism we receive for donating to National and ACT. I'm also aware of the false narrative that we lobby the government and expect something in return.
So let me be clear: we have never lobbied the government.
Less than 1% of ZURU's revenue is in New Zealand.
We donate because we care about this country's future and believe National and ACT have the right talent and strategy to move it forward.
We grew up with that Kiwi number 8 wire mentality. Work hard figure things out and believe you can build something from nothing.
These photos show our second small factory on my parents' dairy farm in Tokoroa, my brother winning the NZ science fair and our first factory in China. We used fibreglass matting from the Kinleith paper mill as flooring because we had no money. We sprayed weeds and milked cows on weekends to help pay the rent.
Then we moved to China and lived on US$1 a day for many years. No exaggeration. My brother spent close to a decade living in a tiny room inside our first factory. For a decade we worked almost every day from morning until late at night sacrificing pretty much every comfort to keep building.Today, we compete globally with some of the biggest companies in the world. We employ thousands of people globally including hundreds of Kiwis, and aim to employ thousands more in New Zealand over the next five years.
We will surpass NZ$10 billion in revenue next year and are investing heavily back into New Zealand.
That's the future we want more Kiwis to have the opportunity to build. A New Zealand that rewards hard work and sacrifice backs people willing to take a chance and encourages them to compete globally and bring that success home. A country ambitious about becoming better and more prosperous.
New Zealand gave us a lot. We care deeply about its future. We expect nothing personally in return from any party. We simply want the next generation to have the opportunities we had and the chance to take them even further.
We want NZ to WIN! build a country of makers not takers

Labour sent out an email about 10 minutes with this handwritten letter from Chris Hipkins saying he has "just come off the stage" The image metadata (which wasn't removed) shows a Sony ILCE-7CM2 took that photo at 1:45pm so a bit before the 3pm campaign launch actually kicked off 😄
A screenshot of an email with the subject line "A personal request - and a note to say thank you"

The letter says "Kia Ora I've just come off the stage at our campaign launch and wanted to thank you. Your support could be the difference between winning and losing. If you can I'd really appreciate it if you can click the buttons below and contribute"

I happened to be near Whenuapai today so I crossed glancing at the all-of-government data centre off my todo list. It's visible from a small cul-de-sac outside the airbase. I waved at someone to try signal that I wasn't a cooker and just found it interesting but I'm not sure they were convinced 😄

If you mean in terms of web design, presumably a lot of heavy lifting from Claude/OpenAI based on the code comments 😄
A screenshot of an HTML code comment that reads:

Live departures. Dormant until <html data-departures="on">: with the switch off nothing is fetched, nothing is rendered and no space is reserved, so the AT links in the markup remain the only behaviour. Also the behaviour with JavaScript off and when the endpoint is absent.

TIL NZ Herald have a Sponsored Stories section where they just run straight advertorials They also loosened their robots.txt file a few days ago which now signals to LLM providers that sponsored stories can be crawled Not that robots blocks anything but it's an explicit open invite now

I'm curious to know what you think but my interpretation of this is that you could provide say; a passport but to meet the criteria, it's not that further ID is required (eg facial scan) but instead you need to do some additional arbitrary step that would be considered within the spirit of the bill?
A screenshot of Section 11 of the Online Safety (Minimum Age and Child Safety Risk Assessment) Bill. "if the only step it takes in respect of the duty" is highlighted.

11 Operators must take steps to prevent persons under 16 years from having accounts

(1) An operator of an age-restricted platform must take reasonable steps to prevent a New Zealand person under the age of 16 years from having an account with the platform.

(2) Requiring manual entry of age or date of birth is not a reasonable step for the purposes of subsection (1).

(3) An operator does not satisfy the duty in subsection (1) if the only step it takes in respect of the duty—
(a) is to require provision of an approved evidence of age document; or
(b) is to use a digital identity service; or
(c) is to do both of those things.

As part of their requirement to vet that advertisers of financial services are actually licensed, Meta asked the Companies Office for access to the Financial Service Providers Register (to know if advertisers are licensed) which was granted but they also asked for PII in addition which was declined
Meta have requested that data provided by the Companies Office for the financial services advertiser verification service includes information such as phone numbers, names and other personal details, to strengthen the verification service. This data is personally identifiable information.

The Companies Office have decided not to provide personally identifiable information to Meta, due to Privacy Act 2020 compliance considerations. Meta have assured officials that the financial services advertiser verification service can be provided without personally identifiable information.

Apparently Chris Penk set up a process where small businesses who are suspended by Meta can contact MBIE to get their appeals escalated
Account Suspensions: Over the past year, Meta has strengthened its approach to suspending accounts that host objectionable material. This has resulted in some small businesses having their accounts inadvertently suspended. A process established by your predecessor, Hon Penk, enables affected businesses who have not had any success though the normal Meta channels to contact MBIE, with cases passed on to Meta for review where appropriate. You have agreed to continue this approach.

As part of this, I had ordered a shirt with the TOP logo rotated upside down but only to receive a regular TOP shirt instead. Anyway, I received an email this morning from the TOP merch store saying they received conflicting advice on hats and that if you have a TOP hat, you should hide it for now
An email from Iain Lees-Galloway at 6:46 AM

It says the following:

Kia ora Marcus,

You have received this email because you purchased merchandise from the Opportunity Shop earlier this year.

This email is only for people who purchased Opportunity Party branded caps. If you did not purchase a cap, please disregard this email.

We have received conflicting advice from the Electoral Commission regarding the caps.
Previously, they were not considered election advertisements and did not require a "promoter statement" (the text that starts Authorised by...").

However, recent advice has called that into question. Right now, it is unclear to us whether caps require the promotor statement. The cap(s) you purchased do not have the promoter statement.

While we clarify this, please keep your cap(s) out of sight. Put them away in your wardrobe or a drawer. Displaying an election advertisement without the promoter statement is a criminal offence and could be referred to the Police.

DIA published 304 pages of advice documents around the citizenship test changes which had this fun little reminder www.dia.govt.nz/diawebsite.n...
Heading: The Ministry of Justice highlighted differences in how the responsibility relating to obeying the law is worded in citizenship material

31. In the current citizenship by grant application form and in guidance on govt.nz, one of the responsibilities of New Zealand citizenship is listed as 'obey and promote the laws of New Zealand'. The Ministry of Justice has highlighted that there is no legal obligation on citizens to promote New Zealand laws, only to obey them.

I updated to the iOS 27 Developer Beta yesterday and was cropping a screenshot of a manga panel just before when Apple Photos suggested that I could "extend" the image using on-device AI Unsurprisingly, it invented two whole characters out of nowhere visible on the bottom left and far right
A panel from Chapter 35 of Smoking Behind The Supermarket With You. Sasaki is caught red handed overspending on fish out of jealousy. The same panel from Chapter 35 but with an extra panel on the far right. In it, a man in a suit says something like "Yey Yer Eorpreny Sere?". He is slightly translucent with barbed wire as his suit material. He is clearly a weird clone of Sasaki, not that it's intentional. On the far left is half a frame. Half of a man looking right is visible with the cut off text "cat" above his head.A screenshot of the iOS Photos UI with the Tools feature selected and the Extend tool in use. Big fan of searching random keywords in Hansard and seeing what falls out Too bad Parliament TV doesn't seem to go back that far
What did John Key say yesterday? Oh, they have issued them with iPads. They have issued them with iPads. That is going to help when you are faced with somebody screaming and ranting, high on P—when you hold up your iPad! I hope that it is on Pokémon GO and you can get the nearest Zubat. Is that what it is going to be? Is that what the answer is to out-of-control crime because of this Government’s failure to resource the police properly? Well, I tell you what: the rest of New Zealand cares. And, of course, the Government has now discovered, because David Farrar has told it, that the rest of New Zealand cares and expects something better.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand would like to use AI to analyse public submissions
A screenshot of a table with the heading "Reserve Bank of New Zealand" and the subheading "Digital Cash - Public Consulation"

The summary reads "The Digital Cash programme has been exploring the high level design options for digital cash, and asking for public feedback on the proposed design features. We received over 18,000 survey responses, and over 500 written responses. This was identified as a good candidate for an AI Proof of Concept (PoC) because of the otherwise heavy manual effort required to analyse the responses and because the nature of the data lent itself well to standard Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) approaches. The AI PoC had the following objectives: Explore AI for analysing Digital Cash Consultation responses and performing sentiment analysis of unstructured datasets. Determine AI's potential to reduce manual effort and uncover new insights. The team approached the PoC by: Using generative AI tools, specifically Microsoft Co-Pilot Studio, to build a chatbot that was deployed as a Microsoft Teams application. Leveraging RAG technique to quickly build an AI application without having to train the AI on submission data."
