I hadn’t seen the swans for four weeks. Today, their five grey cygnets were nearly as large as their parents. One adult held its head high; some groomed, others rested in the sun. I wondered what the river provides that helps them thrive.

Perhaps the best way to talk about climate is to start with something we don’t understand and get curious.

I had no idea what El Niño had to do with the Panama Canal. Then I discovered it is partly a machine powered by rainfall. Ships are lifted 26 metres to an artificial lake using freshwater and gravity. Less rain means less water for ships and people. I’ve been down that rabbit hole all morning.

People across the road wore shorts and short sleeves on a warm September Saturday. I wore a light anorak. Some trees stay green; others turn. One insect looked suspiciously like a tiny surveillance drone. We’ve all got the autumn memo; we each respond in our own way. I wouldn’t miss my daily walk.

I could see two wind turbines in the distance, just doing their thing. Turbineing. Same path, more light. I'm so glad I don't walk past all this anymore.

Half an hour later, on the same path, I noticed a whitebeam tree with red fruit. Then another one.

It was so dark this morning I could barely identify the trees. The foliage wasn't quite black. It wasn't even a black-and-white picture. Then a little light touched the hedge and the green came through.

A system can absorb disruption as long as it still has margin. El Niño is now meeting communities, ecosystems and economies whose reserves have already been repeatedly drawn down.

Hitze kommt selten allein.

Late September in Scotland, and summer seems to have returned. I took off the sailing jacket I didn’t need. Insects hummed and the warm grass smelled of summer. In the woodland, it was green above and autumn below. Nobody had coordinated the dress code.
