I hadn’t seen the swans for four weeks. Today, their five grey cygnets were nearly as large as their parents. One adult held its head high; some groomed, others rested in the sun. I wondered what the river provides that helps them thrive.

People across the road wore shorts and short sleeves on a warm September Saturday. I wore a light anorak. Some trees stay green; others turn. One insect looked suspiciously like a tiny surveillance drone. We’ve all got the autumn memo; we each respond in our own way. I wouldn’t miss my daily walk.

It was so dark this morning I could barely identify the trees. The foliage wasn't quite black. It wasn't even a black-and-white picture. Then a little light touched the hedge and the green came through.

Late September in Scotland, and summer seems to have returned. I took off the sailing jacket I didn’t need. Insects hummed and the warm grass smelled of summer. In the woodland, it was green above and autumn below. Nobody had coordinated the dress code.
