Yeah, you can't have everybody driving EVe without wrecking the planet to pull out the metals. You need the majority of the people to use mass transit and/or live locally enough to not need motorized transport.

Most Americans have been trained to vote against things rather than voting for things. It does not produce good results.

And if you don't do it right you still get the exact same perks. It's just so glaringly one-sided. Its like "who negotiated this thing!?" But hey, bigger problems in the world right now, right? You have a good one.

I'm not justifying cheating. I am saying that the root cause of cheating stems from the difference between wanting to learn and wanting to graduate. And I'm saying that if nobody convinces the student that the learning is worth it, they will either cheat or quit.

You used the word instantly, I did not. Just call me a liar if you're going to call me a liar. The beating around the bush thing is gross. Cheating is nothing new. It has predictable motivations that can be addressed directly. Does that really strike you as untrue?

This is why I blame Scantron for so many of society's ills.

We literally had the answer books, and the sub was not allowed to alter the lesson plan. It was an administrative failure, really, not a teaching failure.

The substitute was not a bad teacher. Pretty much everyone in the class was only there because they needed a trade-related elective to satisfy the terms of a dropout prevention program. It was not a recipe for academic excellence.

I don't think you disagreed with me. It is jarring knowing they aren't obligated to serve in perpetuity and also knowing we are obligated to pay their business expenses in perpetuity. Some wires got crossed somewhere, you know?

"legally" does a lot of heavy lifting there. I'm not suggesting anyone should get sued or arrested. I'm suggesting there are some unspoken expectations at work. Like the way the laws are built around an expectation that any church is automatically a public good.

I had a substitute teacher for two years in my high school electronics class. When they finally hired a replacement, they found that we had learned nothing, even though we all had As. We had figured out a way to cheat, and no one had convinced us there was a reason not to. This was thirty years ago.

I get that. I do. But we pay for office workers doing office work. That doesn't feel like compensation, it feels like an investment. It looks like we (or at least our reps) expect the ex-presidents to still be doing work that benefits the nation as a whole.

I am willing to believe that ex-presidents don't owe us anything. But then why do we pay their office expenses and their travel expenses? I mean, the pension makes sense, but why are we covering business expenses if we don't expect to benefit from the business?

For anyone needing more information on how to get the non-healthcare benefits available for people on both Medicare and Medicaid, look into Dual Special Needs Programs.

Purely in the interest of accuracy... Perfectly healthy people use health benefits. That is what "preventive" means. Also, Medicare Advantage companies have products specifically designed for people on both Medicare and Medicaid that often provide a suite of non-healthcare benefits.

All the trumpy small businesses out in the rural areas around here have replaced their Confederate flags with Israeli flags. Southern racism seems to be going through another rebranding...

In such a situation, Disney would be stopped from making a Percy Jackson movie by the fact that they couldn't use the artificial monopoly of copyright to control the sales of said movie. Anyone could copy and sell the DVD, so no one would pay to produce it.

50/50 with the tie-breaking vote of the VP is a majority, and the filibuster was unpopular enough with Republicans to get support for getting rid of it. They had all the grounds they needed to impeach Thomas. But I repeat- They never even tried.

The Democratic Party had control of Congress and the Presidency from 2021-2023. They had multiple opportunities to fix the court and they did nothing. They didn't even try.

You shouldn't solely rely on anything for research or citations. Any source may include incorrect information and all sources are biased. This is why verification and replication are important, no?

Think all Bill Clinton did was lie about having sex with a willing partner? That's understandable, because pop culture has lied about this for decades. The truth is that he was hiding an affair with a subordinate because he was being investigated for sexually harassing a different subordinate.

That's kind of the point. They want to have fun, because they aren't having fun. It is a bright and shiny song about desperation.

This is that "country" thing you mentioned. Everyone who doesn't trust science is doing these things? Surely reasonable people understand that lack of trust in science is not the same as being actively anti-science?
000 0
Display Names Are Gross @usernamesaregross.bsky.social · 20/06/2025
Yes. And a reasonable person would realize that trust exists on a sliding scale, and can erode slowly over time rather than being destroyed in one fell swoop. They would also realize that blaming the bitten for being shy does not actually help anyone.

A rational reaction to being failed by science is to stop trusting science. So many people turn to medical science for help, only to be misdiagnosed and mistreated, you know? And every time a company or a country does something horrible there's a guy on staff using statistics to hide the bodies.

But they aren't body builders. They are normal folks who don't see a need for show muscles. Forcing someone to lift like a bodybuilder just to get a piece of paper that qualifies them to be department manager at Target? Yeah, they are going to cheat.

When your side wins they work to consolidate power and create a tyranny of the majority. When your side loses, that consolidated power gets used against you. And if your only reaction is "we need to stop losing elections" you're not seeing the real problem.

What power do they have? Wealth, fame, and a vast network of contacts. At a minimum. Elections are not the only source of power.

The Palantir database news proved massively unpopular with Trump's base. Suddenly, there was a slap fight that dominated the news cycle and pushed everything else out. Now this. Luckily, none of it has anything to do with anything else.

They call themselves arcades but they won't let children in. The windows are blacked out and covered in classic slot machine iconography like cherries and triple 7s. The doors are locked and you have to buzz to be let in. They aren't exactly subtle about it.

A weird fact about Florida that most outsiders don't know, is that the state is just absolutely covered in illegal gambling dens. The only businesses more common are car washes and "smoke shops" Obviously, I'm exaggerating. But not by much.
