Trump's America, not as bad as Serbia....yet. "Judged by the eleven criteria the authors devised to score 35 regimes in their earlier research, the U.S. case is comparable to Hungary under Viktor Orbán, if far softer than 1990s Russia or Serbia."

Great reporting by @emilyzfeng.bsky.social The question is: was this a failed attempt by China hawks to purposely troll Xi or simply incompetence?

Thinking of this passage from Aristotle, On Interpretation, for my class today: "Spoken sounds are symbols of affections in the soul, and written marks symbols of spoken sounds. And just as written marks are not the same for all men, neither are spoken sounds.

The President of the United States is obviously mentally ill. This has been evident for a long time. He should be removed from office as soon as possible. But deeply corrupt Republican and conservative elites keep him in power to maintain their own prerogatives and privileges. The Founders weep.

All good points but I am thinking politically, too. Short term economic pain creates a more pressing political problem in the US, which could ( not guaranteed) lead to policy changes that ease the economic pain for PRC. 1/

Instructors teaching China after Mao might find it useful to bundle many short texts to introduce politics, economics, society, and the arts in China over the past five decades. In this EAA article, Mark Baker offers a wide range of suggestions to build a solid syllabus on China after 1976.

Sources for Teaching China after Mao
It is now fifty years since the death of Mao Zedong in 1976; almost two-thirds of the history of the People’s Republic of China is the post-Mao era. The reform era is at the cutting edge of research in Chinese history. At least in my own institution, students with interests in international politics and economy (including many non-history majors) are keen to explore the history of China’s recent decades.  But we have struggled to bridge the gap between Mao’s China and Xi Jinping’s. Many instructors feel ill-equipped to teach the history of China’s last five decades, beyond the barebones...

This seems right and, even though there are complexities, the PRC is likely better able to withstand pain in a more advantageous time frame (short- to medium-term) than the US.

September 9 is the 50th anniversary of Mao's death. Any assertion that his rule materially and morally improved China which does not recognize the millions upon millions of Chinese people killed by the frenzied implementation of his ideology is real historical nihilism.

It really is a waste of time engaging with anything Trump says. Yes, he is very powerful but he is mentally defective and regularly spews nonsense. Best to not let him shape the national discourse. We should advance sources of information and analyses and narratives that exclude him.

Downstream: Taiwan and South China Sea. Xi will likely not push large scale attacks, but US weakness will make it harder to respond to continuing PRC encroachment, creating conditions for a fait accompli.
