Splitting this thread as it threatened to go rather long. I question that the latter happened; the (sometimes-dubious) tales of Grant being drunk both pre-date and post-date Rosecrans' even being in the western theater. Rosecrans was certainly very unhappy about Iuka, and with good reason.

Everyone pretends you can do magic thinky stuff with silicon chips and it's a lie (always has been). Jensen Huang is merely enslaving the souls of the damned. This is why they need all the cooling for datacenters - it's the heat escaping Hell. Most of the expense is actually bribing the demons.

I am wading into a discussion in which, on BlueSky, I find myself on dangerous ground. I say this is a bad idea and people shouldn't propose it. Let be absolutely clear: I have no patience or sympathy for Confederates, Lost-Causers, NeoConfederates, White Supremacists or any similar thing.

I've long thought this was potentially the right game but absolutely, unforgivably at the wrong-est possible time. Because it's like a punchline to a joke we never got. As in, why don't we have a bunch of amazing superhero games? There have been good ones, but the genre is pretty limited.

Related fact: Broccoli created the Broccoli family, which created broccoli. Romans selectively bred Brassica into something like-broccoli called broccolo. The Broccoli family (presumably named after it) bred this further into something more like modern broccoli, which they imported to America.

I want to gently push back on second part of this this: MAHA is not Eugenicist, or at least not usually. And when it is, it's more in the slouched, narrow-minded belief that "Those People" somehow deserve to get sick. Actual Eugenics was cruel-er, but way more Pretend-Rational if that makes sense.

This is a really fascinating alternative-history scenario! One of the big problems was that British politics paid barely any attention to the colonies, but the reverse was not the case. One side effect was that the colonies could barely communicate a message.

I genuinely don't mean to mock @whstancil.bsky.social here. I recognize he's unfairly caught a lot of flack for nonsense in the past. This is flat wrong, and Economists have known this is wrong for over three centuries now, and created multiple theoretical approaches to model this.

This is not a mockery or insult, but I wanted to bring this common idea up to analyze it. We net-import +3 million barrels of oil annually, which actually hides the true mismatch. The forms of oil we export are not the same as imports, and that creates additional costs and frictions.

That's not altogether wrong, but it's also not quite right. The Confederacy had the raw tech and logistical capacity, but it did not use either very well. They focused on ironclad ships and neglected to build railway engines. They grabbed skilled industrial workers and sent them to the trenches.

I don't know if that was theologically right or wrong. I suspect SSPX was never, ever going to calm down. But the olive branch meant they can't use the Latin mass as a wedge issue. Since the fight isn't really over the symbolism, remove the symbolism and force them to make their intentions plain.

I made a joke post here, but there is actual hilarious/stupid/tragicomic Roman history here - the third of the truly awful Emperors: Caracalla. In the tradition of nicknaming the really bad ones like Caligula (Bootiekins) and Commodus (Toilet) we have Caracalla (Hoodie).

I have something to say about this topic, because good people are creating imaginary connections to get the end state they prefer from a plausible-sounding start. Specifically, "I want game creators with more freedom, less stress, and not being fired the second the game goes live".

At least for the moment, the big problem with AI is that it functions like gambling in economic terms: It hasn't created more useful end production of goods or services, at least not yet. What it has done is redirect resources that would go towards useful goods or services to AI instead.

The Wide Awakes were a movement of young Republicans active around the 1856 and 1860, with a special focus on Free-Soil politics and opposing the spread of Slavery, although not necessarily Abolitionist in character. They believed, with justification, that slaveholders were bent on expanding west.

I cannot say how this will end. One point is that Hegseth just went on a rampage ending the careers of very high-ranked military officials. These officials have friends in high places. And Hegseth is now vulnerable over the disaster unfolding in Iran. And Trump already began purging his circle.
