You know that thing where an American goes to a Scandinavian country and consistently experiences less than 5 minute headways on the transportation system and can't shut up about it? That's me now.

As I plan my upcoming trip, for as long as I can, I want to travel to at least one new city every year. I think next year it will be somewhere in Scotland. Would love recos.

Hopes were sky high for shin-Sekiwake Wakatakakage upon winning the yusho in a sensational bout versus Takayasu on the final day of spring 2022. Surely an ozeki title was in his future. Always in impecable condition, no one imagined he'd suffer a major knee injury (in 2023) that would derail ...

Should I go to Stationery Fest this summer? i hate it when i'm struggling with a decision, but I hate standing in line even more.

ursonate @ursonate.bsky.social · 31/03/2026

First day commuting on line 2, going in and coming home both took about the same amount of time. Train was crowded on the way home. Not sure what percentage was tourists. Guessing I saved 20-30 minutes off my overall commuting time vs taking the bus. Gotta walk a bit more, but I don't mind that.

000

ursonate @ursonate.bsky.social · 29/03/2026

But now with the crosslake connection, I can get to the Metropolitan Market on Mercer Island in about half an hour door to door. Total game changer! The more exciting thing will be to see the impact on my commute starting tomorrow.

ursonate @ursonate.bsky.social · 29/03/2026

I eventually realized it could be a little faster if I took the 7 and changed to the D downtown somewhere, but waiting for the connecting bus was always hit or miss. Maybe saved me 15 to 20 mins.

ursonate @ursonate.bsky.social · 29/03/2026

Every so often I'll get on the bus and head up to the Metropolitan Market in Queen Anne. The most direct way was the 8 which always took a while as it wound through eastern Capitol Hill and then crawled up Denny. Takes about an hour to get there.

Recharge. Stay hydrated. Eat a healthy snack. Breathe. Embrace moments of joy wherever you can find them. Prolonged stress can have long term health consequences. Self care is not selfish - it’s empowering. (More info in alt)

A digital art drawing with a cat in three different modes with accompanying text: "rest, regulate, resist”.

Inspired by the political situation that has been unfolding in the US - protests, murders of civilians in the streets by ICE/CBP agents, and the rising fascism that’s been taking hold here. It’s a lot to process. There’s a lot of important news happening, and the term “doomscrolling” feels trivializing in the face of a situation that is unfolding on people’s doorsteps right now. Yes, it’s very important to stay aware and informed.

BUT - it’s also important to be aware of the impact that prolonged acute stress can have on the nervous system. It’s a health hazard in itself, and can result in long term heath problems, including chronic illnesses such as me/cfs. (Ask me how I know… 😞)

So, it’s absolutely crucial during this time to take care of yourself and, as much as possible, not get fully swept away in the stress of current events, as scary, nerve-wracking, infuriating, dangerous, and immediate as they are. Self care is not selfish. We need you at your best.

Union workers solved the trolley problem, you're welcome

IWW IU 520 (Railroad Workers) PRESENTS:

TROLLEY PROBLEM SOLUTION

"Slip the switch" by flipping it while the trolley's front wheels have passed through, but before the back wheels do. This will cause a controlled derailment bringing the trolley to a safe halt.

It was weird to be taken back to that time when the pandemic started raging, but at the same time people were also being killed for dumb reasons. Have we learned anything? So back to jury duty. Just do it. It's annoying on many levels, but important.

ursonate @ursonate.bsky.social · 30/01/2026

I vaguely remember when it happened. I'd just started watching Seattle Protest Network streams on the regular. Most of those streams are long gone now, though I felt like they belonged in the Smithsonian. The turmoil was worthy of preservation.

Whatever happened to lead to this outcome was in the evidence, not the lawyer's arguments, I think. And that's what truly matters.

100

ursonate @ursonate.bsky.social · 30/01/2026

In this case I ended up being the alternate, so I don't know what led to this specific outcome since I didn't participate in the deliberations, though I can hazard a guess. It was all so brutally sad. I am glad of the outcome.
