📝My talk will tackle the impact of imprisonment on the construction of the Other in New Kingdom Egypt and proto-racialization of Egyptian iconography and thought. The lecture is a crossover of my habilitation to be published 2028 by Palgrave in the series New Antiquity and my ongoing MSCA PLUNDER.

☀️Excited to share the slot with no other than Prof. Antonio Loprieno (University of Basel) next week in Bonn! We will discuss the long term implications of war and colonialism on African societies, from Early Dynastic Egyptian warfare to modern colonialism and (post)(de)colonial movements.

5) Many of these groups were employed by “great states” such as Egypt. The so called “collapse” is not a global phenomenon. But this would mean me writing an even longer thread. Cheers!

4) The matter is more complex, as you surely know. Some of these groups (Shardana) are known in textual sources already during the Amarna period. Other groups are known from Amarna letters but disappear in later sources.

3) 2. There is no evidence of a mass migration. In fact, Egyptian evidence indicates that these were small groups (lists of spoils of war, number of ships, title used for their rulers indicate them being mobile “nomads of the sea”) frequenty plundering coastal sites.

2) When scholars, including myself, write that Sea Peoples are a 19th century construct they refer to the following: 1. The term “Sea Peoples” is not attested and it was coined by French Egyptologists in the second half of the 19th century.

1) Well, as much as one cannot ignore the fact that sources from Egypt, Levant and Anatolia mention a number of groups, one should also not assume that they shared identities or agendas.
