It's hard to predict what Parliament would look like under a system where people can vote for what they truly believe in. But one thing is clear: First Past the Post distorts election results and undermines trust in democracy. It's time for change.

A very similar result is given by something I actually think to be a genuinely achievable reform: just add two more list MSPs to each region, which equalises the two "classes". That's SNP 58, RUK 21, LAB 21, GRN 19, CON 14, LD 12, a GI of 10.1; a little higher again, but lower than reality.
A map showing the results of the 2026 Scottish Parliament election if there were two extra list MSPs per region. In percentage and then seat terms, this shows regional results of SNP 27.2 and 1 seat; Reform 16.6 and 21 seats; Labour 16.0 and 21 seats; Greens 14.0 and 17 seats; Conservatives 11.8 and 10 seats; Lib Dems 9.4 and 5 seats; Others 5.0 and no seats.

The extra seats are Labour, Green and Reform in Central Scotland and Lothians West; Reform and Labour in Edinburgh and Lothians East; Greens and Reform in Glasgow; Conservatives and Lib Dems in Highlands and Islands which was already correctly proportional; Green and Lib Dem in Mid Scotland and Fife; Conservative, Reform and Conservative in North East Scotland; Labour and Green in South Scotland; Reform and Labour in West Scotland.

Throughout the campaign I highlighted that the SNP's constituency results were going to stretch AMS far more than any previous election. 1999 was the peak of this, with a net of 7 seats advantage to Labour over the system's own intended workings, based on its own rules. This year? 18 seat difference

Scotland 2026: look how far the SNP sits above the 45-degree "perfect proportionality" line? 27% of votes → 45% of seats. A +17.6% bonus — the biggest distortion of either election. When one party sweeps constituencies, MMP's top-ups can't compensate.
