I’ll say this forever: the cool thing about The Exorcist is even if you’re not shocked by it, it’s one of the most existentially nightmare inducing movies ever made. It’s a movie that argues if god does or doesn’t exist is meaningless in effect.

In fact Heat was him trying to invert the formula of that film. He found a tv work and made it for theaters. He later called it “a catastrophe that missed everything that made Zapped Again a work of the divine”

People forget Mann is obsessed with Zapped Again. He made a documentary on it: A Prayer To Eden. It’s all about his crisis of faith as an artist after seeing it. He knew he couldn’t make it. He then made The Last of the Mohicans as an “I guess this is all I can do”

Every choice in the adaptation floors me. The anachronistic dialogue makes it feel so urgent and real. Making Calypso a PTSD therapist. The flashbacks. God… he’s really that.

What Nolan does here is why he’s our biggest we have. And clearly The Odyssey won’t stop that. It’s him at his absolute peak in terms of what he does. Reading the script is reading a magic trick broken down. You still can’t see how it’s done though.

I need to stress it's staggering brilliance. Nolan is heavily praised as a director but he's a god on the page and he sees the film clearly. But it only works knowing Nolan is writing for himself. PTA is the same
