I am deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake in northeastern Afghanistan. I extend my deepest condolences to the families of those lost and wish a swift recovery for the injured. Our solidarity remains with the Afghan people as partners coordinate to rebuild and restore hope.

#DYK Franklin D. Roosevelt, who led the US through the Great Depression and WWII, died weeks before the 1945 San Francisco Conference. On 29 April, delegates gathered to honor him as “Chief Architect of the United Nations and Apostle of Lasting Peace for all Mankind.” #UNCharter

Did you Know? The #UNCharter was signed in 1945 and laid the foundation for global human rights. Just 3 years later, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted. Today, instruments like the Human Rights Council and the Convention on the Rights of the Child continue that legacy. #DYK

I am deeply alarmed by the attacks by the United States against Iran. I reiterate that we cannot afford further military escalation in the ME. I call on all parties to engage in diplomacy and pursue dialogue in order to settle any disputes in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.

The original manuscript of the #UNCharter’s preamble was typed at the 1945 San Francisco Conference. Today, the Charter is available in all six official UN languages, and its original is kept at the National Archives and Records Administration of the United States. #DYK
