Not a stat that would be worrying on its own (Villa down the bottom and I imagine they were last season when finishing 4th). But to be so far off the coach's claimed desire to be a high-pressing team definitely raises some questions.

He's been average at best since his debut, but I've some sympathy for being asked to hold midfield together with Wissa and Willock.

Agree we need three proper midfielders, but not sure Nico has been poor enough to be dropped yet. Definitely no point playing a 4231 when Wissa and Willock are the options at no. 10 though, and playing them both together was insanity.

Jackson, Manzambi and Mbaye would be perfect for the direct football we're supposedly aiming for. Suzuki's kicking adds a lot to their ability to go long too.

100% agree. We've gone from having 3 attackers for the last five years to starting 5 in the last couple of games. Then I look at Leeds and they still put 4 past us playing 8 defensive-minded players and 2 attackers.

I would have preferred Willock as a 10, it's just that it then means a midfielder coming in for Wissa. I'd have just played Steur on Monday but the options should be there soon with Joelinton, Dedic and Miley all coming back to fitness.

Haven't seen Kev's post, but there was a position map on sofascore that looked very 433. Willock has just played as he would have at LCM under Howe. Don't really know if that's against instruction or not. Plan might be clearer when Miley, Joelinton, Dedic are all deemed properly fit.

While I agree the new players haven't done enough, I'm more concerned that the manager picked Barnes Willock Wissa Murphy to start across the midfield. Understand he might not know his best XI yet, but the errors seem obvious. Feels like we moved away from a 4231 accidentally by picking Willock.

Pretty much, yeah. But to my eye it's been a 433/4141 rather than 4231 in both games because Willock has played the same role he would have under Howe. Found it odd last night because we had plenty of players available you could have sat alongside Nico in the 4231 shape from the first four games.

We played 5 forwards by my count yesterday but it doesn't mean we'll attack well. They all just want to run forward away from the ball. Brighton play three proper cms, a left back on one wing, and another cm on the other wing. But they are still scoring loads. Balance needs to be reset.

I think Steur could have made a difference to that, actually plays with eyes open to what is going on in front of him and thinks about where the ball needs to go. Was very unfortunate not to play after being a standout in the last game.

Yeah, Wissa at 10 I can understand and he was decent against Liverpool and Spurs. But with Willock playing his usual role as a high left center mid, Wissa has dropped a bit deeper and wider too. Don't know if Willock was meant to be in a pair with Steur/Nico but he just hasn't done that.

Multiple times we had 3 man overload with Barnes, Hall, Willock down the left and made the wrong choice. Were lucky that Coventry made no attempt to counter in the first half because we'd left no one to defend if they had.

Andy @undyhatt.bsky.social · 13/10/2026
Yeah, I didn't have much confidence in his 4231 but by picking Wissa and Willock together we've just got a loose 433 shape with no hope of control in or out of possession. Played counter first two games, pinned back by average teams the next two, and most recent two we've had all ball, no clue.

He came in late and has had trouble with injuries, but not sure I can get over him picking Wissa as a centre midfielder. We're not going to have an amazing midfield whoever he picks but right now we're actively encouraging a game of penalty box quality when we're rubbish at both ends.

Andy @undyhatt.bsky.social · 13/10/2026
I think they were able to get him because he's not that much of a consistent goal threat. But it's fine because he gives the team such an easy out ball and can keep a defence under constant pressure even when you're not playing well. Perfect for making a midtable team as competitive as possible.

Me too, but I do think I'd rather have him on the wing for now whenever Osula's available. When you're so poor in your own box, need at least a bit of presence in the other box. Hopefully Burn and Joelinton make a difference leadership-wise. Tactics concern me more because he seems so naive.

Recruitment and coaching both seem to be operating with a view that we're nowhere near relegation. Understanding focus on youth, but feels like we've repeated the Woltemade mistake with Pardo. There wasn't as much desperation for a striker this summer but to take 50m and spend it like that...

Willock should be nowhere near a two-man midfield. He's a winger (or left 10 a 343). If he's been asked to play there the last two games he just hasn't anyway. Feel like because him and Wissa played together we've reverted to a 433 by default, but a very dysfunctional one.

Andy @undyhatt.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
Reverting to three centre midfielders might be an overcorrection - a majority of teams do play 4231. But last two games has been 433 with two forwards in midfield anyway. How did they land on tonight's XI? How do you pick Wissa as a RCM, after 4 games as a striker for DR Congo and not Steur?

Saturday we really need to see some fairly drastic changes from Jaissle. Midfield the priority (three from Nico, Steur, Miley, Joe) should start). Hope for: Dedic Thiaw Burn Hall Nico Miley Steur Barnes Osula Pardo I'll probably be out by about 5 players though #nufc

I don't think he deserves too much slack as he's been poor since his debut, but I feel a little for Nico moving from a midfield playing tika taka with Bernardo Silva et al, to being asked to be a one-man midfield behind Wissa and Willock running away like headless chicken

For 3 games in a row we've picked such a weak central midfield that it has felt not just naive but almost disrespectful to the opposition. It just about worked vs a two man Hull midfield. Against Villa, who pretty much play 5 CMs, we just can't go kamikaze again. Jaissle needs to wake up! #nufc

Yet to see what the new manager's idea is. It surely can't be playing a 4-1-5 with Willock and Wissa as false centre midfielders. So why start that ridiculous XI? If getting pumped 4-1 by sides who won't score more than 2 in any other game is what happens while we work things out... #nufc

Petty, but I thought if you injured a player you have to wait to come on too. Why did the Coventry guy get to kick Willock in the head and then take the throw before he was back on? #nufc

Think we've seen enough of the Wissa as a CM experiment. Still been able to dominate and create a lot of decent openings but only because Coventry instantly became passive. Hopefully Osula is ready to have an impact off the bench, and would like to see Steur on a little further forward. #nufc

Ferreira was playing as a 10, so probably had that on his back. Again wouldn't swear to it from watching a bit on my phone. Was nice seeing some of them against weaker opposition in the last 25 mins. First time I've "got it" with Alabi, and Ca had a bit of fun too.

These top speed things always throw up some random players. Think it's very rare anyone hits top speed, so it's always just someone chasing back a long distance in a straight line.

Yeah, proper football league journeyman with some real quality too. Might be misremembering but think he was part of a Man U team schooled by a teenage Dele Alli and MK Dons, and never really played for them again.

Much more one-sided second half as the football league side dominated the longer it went on. Still a decent showing from #nufc with (I think) three 16 year olds playing. The CB Johnson who impressed in preseason put in a good shift at RWB. First I've seen of Koussou (16 yo CM) - looked strong.

When you see the random players who record some of the fastest sprints you realise how rare it is that anyone hits top speed. To the eye Pardo looks so fast, but that's probably about acceleration.

I've probably cut off the credit here, trying to avoid a messy screenshot. Was from an Instagram account that does this round up every round of fixtures in the prem.

With all loans out, and four away with England U18s, I've been really impressed with the u21s against Bradford. Gone toe-to-toe, and the lovely Ferreira just scored a beauty for 1-0. Mason Miley is a little menace. Absolutely no fear about leaving one on senior pros. #nufc

Not sure if these running stats from the weekend have already been shared. No surprise that Pardo sprinted the furthest. Pleasing that Miley covered so much ground from RB. Mad that Murphy recorded a higher top speed than anyone else. #nufc

Some of it might also be because Belloumi was the only attacking threat Hull had in their starting XI

Double pivot seems here to stay, although it was interesting seeing more of a 433 yesterday. Have we seen Nico next to Steur yet? That feels promising after what Steur did yesterday. Steur as the lone 6 worked v Hull but can't think of many other fixtures it would.

Yeah, I just feel there is probably a compromise to be made somewhere. I thought it might Joelinton or another midfielder filling a wide spot, but Miley at RB could be another option to make us more solid

Andy @undyhatt.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
For now, yeah. I think he can be a very good midfielder. He's no slower than Nico or Steur. But they are able to dictate possession better. Think that can come with experience for Miley. Steur doing it at 18 is a rare, rare talent.

I agree he looks a great attacking option, but I wonder if having him and Hall attacking high and wide can really be covered enough with the centre backs and midfielders we have.

Andy @undyhatt.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Interestingly Jaissle said we didn't change shape yesterday. Possibly true as when Hull had settled possession Murphy had always been in the backline to make a 5. So arguably Thiaw became the RB in possession, but I think the signal or having Schar on meant that Murphy never pushed on again.

Building up from the back, we can get into a solid shape with: Thiaw Nico. Botman Miley. Steur Then we should be comfortable playing through Steur, or Nico's long passes.

Fingers have been pointed at the midfield for the number of shots and chances we've conceded, but there's an issue of balance. Playing four attackers, and two attacking fullbacks has been a very bold choice. Miley at RB gives us another CB-sized player in defence and more control on the ball.

Andy @undyhatt.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
As well as Dedic started, I think Miley made a strong case for being first choice RB. No surprise, as he was our best RB last season and team played best with him there. Not a judgement on his midfield performance (mistake yesterday was out of character) but about the balance he brings at RB #nufc

Normally feel like pressing on your own is ultimately quite pointless, but he's so fast it still works. When we get Osula or Elanga backing him up rather than Wissa we'll be a nightmare to play out against.

Definitely agree on the work rate, some great defensive stuff today around our own penalty box. Even in some of the games this season I've thought he only really busts a gut for a high turnover that could give him a bit of glory. Worked his socks off for the team today.
