I'm from Brighton originally. Though not a massive football fan, I was a teenager when the Goldstone Ground was sold and vividly remember the pitch invasion and chaos after the last game there. If i am supporting any team in the Premier Leaugue, then its Brighton. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/footba...

Back in civilisation after ~ 2 weeks in the wilderness. What have I missed in the world?

Very few sheep on the top, but not zero. But you do have to pass through some fields / open moor with sheep to get up and down (we went garsdale station to k stephen station). Meets the long criteria though!

A traverse of Mallerstang Edge is seriously underated. Without the drama of other fells, but you can see so much from up there. The 3 peaks, wild boar fell, howgills, n lakes, eden valley, upper swaledale, gt shunner fell. The width of the vista is outstanding. And you may not see another soul.
A rocky edge to a flat toppes fell fall away to the valley floor with strewn boulder beneath. In the distance are two of the three peaks of the yorkshire dales, on the otherside of the valley swarth fell. All beneath bkue skies with only some thin high patchy clouds.

I think both things can be true. If it is something that suits you it probably is good for you. Especially when there is less participation options for girls. But that doesn't mean it will suit everyone and there are plenty of down sides too.

This last point is an issue. I care more about seeing the local players, and also their development. The disconnect has widened. They have torn up teams and put them back together with fewer people I am motivated to follow. I am switching off.

Fleur Loveridge @undertheground.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
Agree. Its an instinctive dislike of the Indian branding, and way too much change in terms of the players. All teams evolve, but ripping up and starting again does not keep your fanbase. I am feeling much more disinterested in it this year.

And interesting reflection on what Ireland should do, but doesn't touch on whether the ICC should do anything. To have a system that determines where your women can play based on men's status is to me the crux of the issue. Just one of many issues with how BCCI/ICC devides the spoils.

Wow, most amazing long weekend on Arran, with gorgeous weather and not as hot as elsewhere. Four days, 35 miles underfoot, over 4.5km of ascent/descent and 1500m of super easy grade rock climbing. Back to work for a rest tomorrow.
Me, next to a trig point of Mullach Buidhe, with the eastern hills of Arran, including Cir Mhor and A'Chir ridge in the background and blue skies above. Shorts and t-shirt weather near the summit of Goat Fell, with Cir Mhor and associated ridges behind, and not a cloud in the sky. Me, on a granite slab, pointing behind to the spiky ridge of A'Chir which we had just climbed.

Fascinating afternoon/evening out in the field, downloading the first results of our water tracing experiment. Underground water flow really does sometimes do crazy things. Some Qs answered, more posed. So reset, and more dye set running to find out!
A man in an orange jacket sat on the grass with a tablet connected to q datalogger in a black waterproof box. A man wearing wellies stands in a stream that issues from a small cave entrance at the foot of a cliff. He looks at his watch to check the timings as part of the datalogger set up.

Agree. Something else important in the climate crisis is not hoblling your innovation sector by destroying your world leading universities. Sadly both sides of the pond falling into that mistake. Sigh.

Fleur Loveridge @undertheground.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
Its because its so important that it actually matters who is in no.10 and the Whitehouse. And actually, in Starmer's government, energy and climate is something they have not been too terrible on. The other side of the pond, however, is a different story.

When Sam Freedman @samfr.bsky.social shared his article about why universities were in trouble and why they need investment, a Labour MP jumped in to say they weren’t a priority for her. She may be surprised at how many people are employed in universities and how important they are to the economy.

We recommend: 1. Make the subsurface visible in energy planning. 2. Align heat, electricity and grid planning. 3. Develop market mechanisms to incentivise inter-seasonal storage 4. Develop a geothermal heat ownership model. Read more: www.leeds.ac.uk/policy-leeds... [3/3]

Shallow geothermal energy, especially for storage, will benefit the grid and the whole energy system by reducing peak demand. It can also use excess renewables in heat storage. But current energy planning frameworks do not account for geothermal resources, overlooking viable opportunities. [2/3]
