Seasonal forecasts can become an important tool to adapt to climate change, but translation of weather extremes to actual crop impacts is still a weak. In this new paper, led by @ignaciosg.bsky.social, we show what forecasts do well in three African countries, and where more innovation is needed.

'We emphasise the importance of assessing skill at the indicator level, exposing the full forecast probability distribution, and integrating forecasts with crop models to inform decisions such as planting dates, variety selection, and food availability planning.' Uncharted Waters is working on it.

Our latest monitoring data from Central Asia show a further decline in the region's mountain snowpack. Working with TIIAME in Uzbekistan, we've been actively monitoring the situation since 2008. Smaller tributaries have lost over 50% of their minimum snow cover compared to two decades ago.

Yep. People have started to appreciate (and question) the fact that we use 30-40% of our US corn supply for ethanol, but it flies under the radar that we now use 40-50% of our US soybean oil supply for biodiesel. BTW all this supplies only like 5% of US transport fuel. Inefficient resource use.
