We're getting a lot of questions about the reported plague case in Russia, and we understand why headlines about "the plague" are scary. Let's go through what we know, and what we don't. This deserves close attention, but the chance of it becoming a wider outbreak, let alone a pandemic, is very low.

Somewhere along the way, we started expecting health advice to be novel, exciting, or a secret, & the basics stopped feeling like enough. I think that says a lot about what we’ve allowed the word “wellness” to become, & about how many of us in science & medicine have learned to flinch at it.

1 in 1,000 1 in a million Most of us struggle to make sense of risk when it is presented as a statistic. @unbiasedscipod.bsky.social teamed up w/ CIDRAP to create `What's the Risk?`— a free, interactive tool that turns abstract numbers into clear visual comparisons: bit.ly/3TvVsWL
The image is an informational graphic titled "What's the Risk?" comparing the risk of encephalitis (brain swelling) from measles infection versus the MMR vaccine. The top part shows a brain labeled as encephalitis from measles infection, affecting all ages. The bottom part shows another brain labeled as encephalitis from the MMR vaccine, affecting ages 12 months to 7 years. The graphic mentions the "What's the Risk?" tool created by Unbiased Science, supported by the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP).This infographic compares the risk of encephalitis from measles with the risk from a vaccine. The risk from measles is 100 per 100,000 people, while the risk from the vaccine is 0.1 per 100,000 people, highlighting that the risk from natural infection is significantly higher. It includes logos for Unbiased Science and the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP).2 charts comparing complications from measles and the MMR vaccine. Red indicates serious outcomes, and blue icons represent mild or temporary ones. Text on the graphic reads, "How do complications of measles and MMR stack up? Use this tool to compare vaccine risks to the diseases they prevent, side-by-side, before making important health decisions." Includes logos of Unbiased Science and CIDRAP.This infographic compares the risk of complications from measles and MMR vaccine. Text reads, "Sometimes, age changes risk. Compare across different age groups to see what applies to you. Hover over each square for more detail with sources included. Is 100,000 still hard to visualize? Try changing it to 5,000 people instead. Color-coded so you can see what's serious and what's temporary, because not all outcomes are equally bad." It includes logos for Unbiased Science and the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP).
