What happens when fuel economy standards have no penalties? AREC professor Joshua Linn tells POLITICO that Congress effectively turned the standards into a “suggestion.” “But there’s no penalty if you don’t do it.” www.politico.com/news/2026/09...

The repeal of the 2009 “endangerment finding” is one of the biggest shifts in U.S. vehicle policy in a decade. Short-term: lower vehicle prices, higher profits. Long-term: fewer EVs, higher fuel costs, ~$33B in projected societal costs by 2030. Policy shapes markets. Markets shape outcomes. #econsky

The NSF has frozen all new and existing research funding — and quietly introduced a policy to screen proposals for “alignment” with agency priorities. $739M in grants already cut. A stark reminder that how we fund science shapes what gets asked — and who gets to ask it. #EconSky

Why did so many U.S. coal plants shut down from 2005–2015? Some blame regulations—but a study co-authored by Josh Linn (AREC at UMD) points to market shifts. Read Linn’s Paper:

The roles of energy markets and environmental regulation in reducing coal‐fired plant profits and electricity sector emissions
Between 2005 and 2015, US electricity sector emissions of nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide, which harm human health and the environment, declined by two thirds, and many coal-fired power plants bec...

Charles Darwin published his book Descent of Man #OnThisDay in 1871. In it he wrote: "It has often been asserted that man’s origin can never be known, but ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge."

📢 #CallForPapers CEPR welcomes submissions of papers and expressions of interest in attending a #conference on "The Economics of Longevity and Ageing", to be held at London Business School from 31 July - 2 August. 📆Submit by: 28 Feb 2025 More details: cepr.org/events/econo... #EconSky
CEPR is now accepting submissions of papers and expressions of interest for a conference on “The Economics of Longevity and Ageing”, to be held at London Business School from 31July - 2 August 2025.

We welcome papers on a broad range of topics related to the economics of #longevity and ageing - both micro and macro, theoretical and applied.

We are particularly interested in:
How biological and functional measures of #health relate to economic outcomes and interventions to improve healthy life expectancy.
Empirical work on the links between health and individual economic outcomes and their macroeconomic consequences, especially obesity.
Valuing health and how to combine health and economic outcomes to give a welfare measure
The role of longevity and ageing on life cycle behaviour
How institutions should respond to the challenges of increasing longevity and population ageing.

There is potential for papers to be published in a special issue of the Journal of the Economics of Ageing. We are especially keen to support junior researchers.

Organised by: Julian Ashwin (Maastricht University), David Canning (Harvard University) and Johanna Wallenius (Stockholm School of Economics and CEPR), as part of the CEPR RPN “Ageing and Longevity” led by Andrew Scott (Ellison Institute of Technology Oxford and CEPR).
