I see. Yes - it needs to grow (more importantly, retain) and in a way to break Twtr’s network effects. That is problem #1 to solve. Protocol’s success depends on the first reference client and the first client is a Twitter clone, so beating Twitter is the game.

I’ll posit that intuition vs data was the difference between early Twitter and early Facebook. Easy to go wrong with either extreme - you need intuition to ship and data to check your intuition. Especially because social or marketplace-like products can behave very non-intuitively.

Spamming contacts is out of the question. I don’t think contact info should be at the protocol level, just a client that does the linking and matching — could be Bluesky or some other client that could serve a directory or profile need)

Definitely a trade-off worth evaluating. But the best thing about a decentralized protocol is that you’re not giving that data to a third party, just using it for your own needs. Could be a different client from Bluesky that helps bootstrap the graph.

The large networks have used these tactics successfully, but many early adopters / vocal minority also don’t like these tactics. So may be controversial, but will drive growth.

Yeah, it is hard. My suggestions: 1. Get phone contacts and match to friends 2. Inject posts liked by ppl you follow (proven to be better than the avg post from ppl you follow) 3. Promote prolific people, incentivize people to be prolific
