Have you ever wondered how the Comparative Pathology Lab, Iowa Neuropathology Resource Lab and Histology Research Lab work together? These labs are integral for the function of various services and projects in our department and throughout University of Iowa Health Care
Graphic that shows how the three labs work together. CPL and INRL are on the top row with HRL underneath them. CPL provides tissue preparation services for downstream histology, where INRL provides brain tissue and neuropathology expertise and handles all CNS requests. Those two labs then feed into the HRL, which handles all non-CNS histology requests.

A study from Drs. Zizhen Kang and Yuhang Wang reports the generation of a conditional NLRC4 V341A knock-in mouse that robustly mirrors the clinical + immunopathological hallmarks of autoinflammation with infantile enterocolitis (AIFEC), a rare but often fatal monogenic disorder.

Cerebellar atrophy and Purkinje cell degeneration are common features for those with Alcohol Use Disorder. A recent study from Jia Luo, PhD's research lab has identified a key protein that links alcohol-induced cerebellar degeneration and age-related neurobehavioral decline.

Dr. Karandikar's (@PathImmune) group was the first to show that CD8+ T cells targeted to CNS antigens can suppress disease activity and be used as a potential therapeutic approach. This recent study digs into the mechanism in which these CD8+ T cells help in mitigating disease.
