As the Tory George Osborne explained in 2021, Scotland's departure would end the UK. NI's would not. Gordon Brown recently, and John Alderdice more than once over the last few years have made similar observations. www.irishtimes.com/news/politic...
Text from the linked Irish Times arricke

Mr Osborne said unionists in Northern Ireland had always feared Britain was not sufficiently committed to their cause.

“Now their short-sighted support for Brexit (and unbelievably stupid decision to torpedo Theresa May’s deal that avoided separate Irish arrangements) has made those fears a reality. It pains me to report that most here and abroad will not care.”

The departure of Scotland from the UK would be a more serious matter, he implies, and it would represent the end of the United Kingdom

The UK can accomodate this for people in Cornwall, Wales and Scotland but it's "divisive", "unreasonable" and "belligerant" for the Irish in Northern Ireland.
Cornwall council is completing a striking 10-year strategy that envisages Kernewek as a “thriving, forever language – widely spoken, seen and heard in everyday life in Cornwall”.

Goals include making sure every child in Cornwall leaves primary school with a basic understanding of Cornish, establishing the first bilingual school and making sure Cornish is routinely seen and heard in civic spaces.

It says progress would include marriages and births being registered in Cornish, bilingual road signs and the development of a public service media in the language.

Here are others from Ben Lowry's Belfast Newsletter, gushing about the defendants. By turns deferential, plaintive and – especially in the third screenshot – disturblingly effusive, almost in the simpering style of a royal correspondent.
The actual court appearance was orderly and professional. The Donaldsons stared respectfully ahead towards Judge Eamonn King at the far end of the court, while a packed public gallery and 13 of the most experienced journalists in Northern Ireland watched the couple in the dock. The bar on them having contact was lifted at Wednesday's brief hearing., when they both seperately spoke to confirm their age and that they understood the charges against them, but they nonetheless left separately, apparently to seperate addresses. On Wednesday there was a sense of the loneliness of thwir court experience: they arrived independent of each other, both having to navigate a media scrum, and they keft only accompanied by their lawyers to walk through the same gauntlet.I was struck by the almost poignant way the married couple demonstrated yheir respect for the proceedings. I imagine that Lady Donaldson, who tilted her head and briefly smiled atbpoints and even spoke a few words to the custody officer beside her, was – understandably – trying to convey a sense of dignity amid an appearance that even the most accomplished public performer would find gruelling.

Doctors in Gaza observed a disturbing pattern: children with a single gunshot wound to the head or chest, a sign that they had been deliberately targeted. This emerges from research by de Volkskrant, which spoke with the doctors who are among the last international eyewitnesses.

This story contains disturbing images

Key findings
Fifteen international doctors told de Volkskrant that during their work in hospitals in Gaza, they saw children aged 15 years and younger with gunshot wounds to the head or chest. According to the most conservative count, they collectively saw 114 children with such wounds, the majority of whom have died.
Eyewitnesses told the doctors that the bullets mostly came from Israeli army (IDF) snipers or drones.
According to former commander of the Dutch land forces Mart de Kruif, the chance that these were accidental hits is negligible, since the doctors describe more than a hundred cases.
Nine doctors told de Volkskrant that they had seen wounds possibly caused by controversial fragmentation weapons.
The Israeli army refuses to answer questions about shooting at children and says it neither possesses nor uses fragmentation weapons.

This is a statement by Margaret Thatcher writing in her 1993 autobiography, The Downing Street Years. She clearly states from her Unionist position that Scotland is indeed a nation and that therefore it has the right to self-determination. She also states that this right should not be impeded.
In the book, she writes on her legacy in Scotland, saying that some Scots resent a perceived domination of the union by England.

She writes: “As a nation, they [the Scots] have an undoubted right to national self-determination; thus far they have exercised that right by joining and remaining in the Union.

“Should they determine on independence no English party or politician would stand in their way, however much we might regret their departure. What the Scots (nor indeed the English) cannot do, however, is to insist upon their own terms for remaining in the Union, regardless of the views of the others.

A bizarre aspect of Brexitism. They believe Scotland had no constitutional identity in the years between the Acts of Union prior to devolution (drivel), and they don't believe it should have such an identity now. They claim the term 'UK' is woke and entered use 30 years ago rather than 225 years ago
sense of political distinctness, too, based on a belief that Scotland was more collectivist and socialist in culture than England, and hence deserving of its own constitutional identity to go with the cultural and political ones.

Out of this came the devolved administrations and the gradual growth of the modern belief that this country is made up of four nations joined in a voluntary union, a kind of mini-EU, with the bureaucratic term “UK” to describe it.

This, from a mutual on mastodon, is why we don't cycle even though we don't have a car and even though there is no useful public transport near us (unless we walk 15 minutes uphill in the wrong direction). And we're in a city. Hard to explain the mentality to other Europeans.

Some people over the water still dream that they might still be able to raise the border here against the will of the majority of people in both jurisdictions. Never not at it. #Ireland #CTA #ECHR #Brexit
Tekegraph headline:

David Frost

Britain can’t trust Ireland to manage its border
Why are Dublin’s third-country residents allowed to cross into our country paperwork-free?an open border to Northern Ireland. Does Britain have any borders worth the name at all?

We can’t carry on like this. So what is to be done? One possibility would be to turn the CTA into a proper Schengen-type scheme, with common entry criteria and a common external border. But that would take Ireland out of the EU free movement area and put it into a Britain-dominated one. It’s hard to see that landing well in woke, nationalist Ireland or indeed in Brussels.

Another option would be to insist Ireland did what the EU has just done to us in Gibraltar. Just as the Spanish police get to stand behind Gibraltar border officers, supposedly to give them “confidence” that Gibraltar won’t allow illegal entry into the Schengen area, so we could demand a Border Force presence at Dublin Airport. It would be enjoyable to turn onto the Irish their arguments to us during Brexit, and insist that since policing couldn’t be done at the land border, it would have to be done at the Irish point of entry. Sadly, few national negotiators are as feeble as Britons faced with the European Commission, so we can hardly expect the Irish to roll over as ours have done to facilitate such a solution.

So the only other choice is to come back to the land border. Why should it remain control-free for ever? Why can’t we have more checks, closer to the border? Why are third-country residents of Ireland allowed across paperwork-free? Why can’t we do as the Irish do, and visibly check movements south across the border when they think it necessary? We can’t be complacent. We should start asking these questions. For we can’t be taken for granted for ever.

A bit from over the water admitting it's Loyalists. After making a series of excuses for the pogroms and blaming immigrants for forcing Loyalists to do it, there's this bit of taig bashing (we're too thick to be as racist as the author) and it ends with a prediction we'll see the light and join in.
Colum Eastwood and Claire Hanna of the SDLP have intoned at length about the meddling hands of English politicians and social media in stirring up trouble.

Their response is an effective resignation from political and social reality. Irish nationalism relies on tales of famine and migration and supposed colonial oppression to justify its existence. Engaging with the challenges posed by unfettered immigration is therefore intellectually and emotionally uncomfortable for Sinn Fein, the SDLP and the rest of the nationalist constellation.

This is wrong. No criteria for calling a BP has been published by UKG. There's no requirement in domestic or international law for pro-unity parties to have a majority in the NIA. No one demands Unionist parties have 50%+1 in the Assembly to stay in the UK. That double standard would violate the GFA
Are we entering Border Poll Territory?

In simple terms we are not. Only election results will determine the calling of a referendum. The pro-unity vote share has remained static (despite the decline of pro-union parties) since 1998 and there are no signs that it can reach the 50+1 benchmark. What is shown within the survey is a small decline, within the pro-unity bloc, as opposed to the accelerated growth required to reach 50+1.

The Ukranian government has issued this statement on Ireland supplying Russian aluminium plants. They plainly aren't buying the BS being sold by ministers here. It's also attracting a lot of international coverage, just to add to the cringe.
A screenshot of text from a statement by the Ukranian government.

The Embassy of Ukraine to Ireland expresses its serious concern regarding the continued export of alumina from Ireland to the Russian Federation.

According to a trade data, this troubling trade flow has increased significantly, with exports rising from €196 million in 2021 to €318 million in 2025, positioning the Russian Federation as the largest destination for Irish alumina exports and surpassing traditional European partners. This represents the highest level of exports to Russia since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

These figures raise serious concerns, as alumina remains a critical raw material for the production of aluminium, which is extensively used by Russia’s military-industrial complex. Aluminium is used in the manufacture of a wide range of Russian military systems, including Iskander-M ballistic missiles, Tsirkon hypersonic missiles, Kh-101 and Kalibr cruise missiles, as well as Shahed-136/Geran-2 attacks unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The devastating consequences of Russia’s military production continue to be felt daily by the people of Ukraine. Over the past week alone, the Russian Federation has launched more than 2,900 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided aerial bombs, and more than 150 missiles of various types against Ukrainian cities and communities. Every activity may contribute to sustaining Russia’s industrial and military capacity warrants careful examination.

The government are lying. They know very well – as do the rest of us – that that this is being processed into aluminium in Russia and used to make munitions that rain down on Ukrainians every day. This screenshot is a description of how it works in practice:
The supply chain is structured as follows:

Raw material is mined from Rusal-owned mines in Guinea and Brazil (majority owned by Glencore)

It arrives in Ireland and it is processed into alumina in Aughinish

The alumina is then shipped directly from Ireland to Russia where it is then processed into aluminum by Rusal in plants in St. Petersburg, and in Eastern Siberia

The final product is then sold by Rusal to ASK, the Russian state monopoly on aluminum who then distributes it to the military.

Every single company, firm and entity benefiting from the reselling by ASK, including Rusal and ASK itself, are all sanctioned entities. Trade with these firms is not supposed to be legal.
