I'm not a King purist, nor a CARRIE purist, but if your changes to a story make it less complicated and less interesting, I think what you're doing should be understood less as adaptation and more as babyproofing

Anyway all that being said I'm in the middle of Zero Company and it kicks ass. High recommend

Also what kind of person says "I love Star Wars for its glorious combat." Like I think I get it but these aren't, like, martial arts movies. The big fights only land because you get invested in the world and, importantly, the characters

If anything, I would argue Racer and Zero Company are exceptions to the rule only because they give the player space to do stuff that matters outside of combat mechanics (I am assuming for Schrier combat translates to the flat category of "gameplay"), which AAAs have always struggled with

uhohnotgood.bsky.social @uhohnotgood.bsky.social · 7h
And who says people don't like Star Wars for its character building? The entire engine of those (pre-Disney) movies is character building. They mainly revolve around one scary guy's ability to grow and change

What makes Andor "experimental?" Eraserhead is experimental. Andor is a pretty normal show. It's a political thriller. The showrunner has made this kind of thing before and no one was calling those experimental

uhohnotgood.bsky.social @uhohnotgood.bsky.social · 7h
I also have so many questions about why one would think like this about the topic in general. What makes "gameplay" and "storytelling" binary categories? How do you/why would you separate them?
From the article: "Really, though, maybe Star Wars is just a better fit for games then it is for films and TV shows. From the beginning, fans have taken to this universe because of its rich lore, visual spectacles and glorious combat, which all suit gameplay more than storytelling. And aside from experimental projects like Andor, in-depth narratives and character building have never been this franchise's strong suit."

uhohnotgood.bsky.social @uhohnotgood.bsky.social · 7h
I don't understand this argument, less so having read the piece, which primarily summarizes the licensing history of this franchise. None of these games are anywhere near as good as the original trilogy or Andor, and there have been wayyy more dogshit Star Wars games than there've been classics

"She's into that sort of thing" and the "sort of thing" is social drinking, an activity so hard coded into our collective culture that it predates all currently practiced religions

We should see the existence of billionaires as a resource allocation problem not a personal test of character for a lucky few

uhohnotgood.bsky.social @uhohnotgood.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Yes haha to be clear I'm not trying to besmirch Dolly Parton's good name, I'm just trying to denigrate the existence of billionaires as a concept. The reason why people like her are considered remarkable in the first place is bc people at her level of wealth rarely have those pro-social principles
150
uhohnotgood.bsky.social @uhohnotgood.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Well, first of all, she's not a billionaire as demonstrated by the headline. But again, we shouldn't have to sit here and hope our billionaires/millionaires are benevolent enough to pay their fair share back into the system. They should be doing that by default

uhohnotgood.bsky.social @uhohnotgood.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Perhaps those billionaires would not have needed to engage in charity work if we had taxed them appropriately and just funded those causes in the first place. Perhaps - stay with me here - billionaires funding charities is public reputation laundering that enables their continued existence

I just think we should be careful in discussing this, it's one of the single most sensitive issues for many people. It's important we avoid blanket statements in this context in general imo
020
uhohnotgood.bsky.social @uhohnotgood.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I see! Appreciate the context. Not going to co-sign the green party's argument there lol. But I jumped in at "finding our community online is bad." I don't really see the evidence of this behavior being bad for victims of abuse, although of course it is catastrophic when abusers do it

uhohnotgood.bsky.social @uhohnotgood.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
In my experience, people cutting off parents for their political rhetoric is rare. Much more common in separations is that the rhetoric is only the surface aspect of a much deeper and more painful problem
150
uhohnotgood.bsky.social @uhohnotgood.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
It's not the responsibility of an abuse victim to correct their abusers politics, nor is that usually a possibility in the first place. I'm not joking when I say the stakes here can be life or death, particularly for the LGBT community, particularly right now
130
uhohnotgood.bsky.social @uhohnotgood.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I interpreted what you said in good faith. But the personal dominates the political here. As someone familiar with child advocacy I think we should be very careful with this notion of resolving political grievances between loved ones as anything but a deeply secondary concern vs personal harm
160
uhohnotgood.bsky.social @uhohnotgood.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
This is very easy to say if those in your life love and cherish you, but bracingly insensitive if the people in your life believe you or another loved one should not exist based on their race or gender. Sometimes you need to find support elsewhere

We've ended up in this 'choose your own restorative justice' debate where the stakes of 'justice' seem to just be "how should the audience feel about engaging with the perpetrator's content," or worse, arbitrary projection about what the perpetrator is thinking and feeling
0211
uhohnotgood.bsky.social @uhohnotgood.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I'm concerned about the way restorative justice is being framed in these conversations in general. Random people cannot enforce restorative justice. There's little possibility of it occuring at all in a society so lax on men's behavior that they can trivially dodge repercussions for their actions

I heard a YouTuber talking about this remaster say, 'hey, maybe one day AI will just let us set our own preferences for how a game looks.' An astonishingly anti-art sentiment. No analysis at all, a customer-is-always-right mentality about other people's personal work. Insanity
000
uhohnotgood.bsky.social @uhohnotgood.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
We're at the point where every remaster should generate at least some skepticism about what "upgrading" a game means, but instead the remaining press/YouTubers out there are totally incurious about even very basic aspects of the subject they cover

uhohnotgood.bsky.social @uhohnotgood.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
This happens in film from time to time where visual characteristics are changed between rereleases, and it always generates discussion around what that means (remember when they recolored The Matrix?). In games, though, the very idea of visual art is treated as incidental to engaging with the thing

uhohnotgood.bsky.social @uhohnotgood.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
This is the kind of thing that drives me bonkers. Arbitrarily transforming the way every cutscene and environment is lit is a massive change. From what I can tell, scenes with hand-designed lighting have been replaced by a "realistic" simulation. The visual coherence of some scenes have changed
Quote from article: "Across the game, the changes have made The Witcher 3 feel modern and revitalized, though they don't fundamentally alter what's there."

Very gross to call discussing the systematic undermining of an entire country of people over nearly a century a "niche hobby." By saying "I don't need to understand what actually happened here to condemn people to my left" you are much closer to the right than you seem to think

One productive part of this phenomenon where everyone in the world is talking about one guy who they seem to know nothing about is that I really do think it reveals a lot of the people calling shots on here and elsewhere fundamentally do not know where the average person is at

This guy was phone banking for candidates on stream. People were coming out to events and donating to campaigns at his request. Weird to see people make big claims about what he is or isn't doing seemingly without ever engaging with his work or being even tangentially aware of it

Regardless of whatever your analysis is of what he is doing in a functional sense, it's pretty obvious that both he and his detractors from both parties do not believe he is doing engagement bait. Very much worth looking into why that is before just dismissing the entire thing as irrelevant

Maybe I misunderstood. I took what you were saying to mean 'political outcomes are mostly decided by good/bad individuals and not social structure' which I'm disagreeing with

uhohnotgood.bsky.social @uhohnotgood.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
That's a false binary. Capitalism is the thing that consolidates power to those "guys." That doesn't invalidate the influence of psychology/culture but you can't dismiss this like world-historic global compulsory apparatus separating people into the categories worker/owner as incidental to politics

I hate boomer slop. Beyond the fact that this argument is straight up wrong, what is this format? Is that a quote? What does the Dominion lawsuit have to do with the "decline of American civilization?" And who the fuck is that guy? Is *he* "pinkhairedlawyer?" Where the fuck is his pink hair then???

There is a crazy amount of bad faith criticism about yellow paint out there. Even as a bit of a hater myself, the most vitriolic critiques of it I've seen are about games where it's not really substantially interrupting what the game is doing visually otherwise (RE:4, FF7:R, etc)
010
uhohnotgood.bsky.social @uhohnotgood.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
I also don't think "yellow paint" is one singular phenomenon where everyone arguing about it is talking about the same thing (although I do think youtubers are training players to get irrationally angry at the sight of it). Some games are able to leverage it as a tool better than others, imo

uhohnotgood.bsky.social @uhohnotgood.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
The visual language/overall look of a game being overwritten in spots for the sake of gameplay clarity strikes me as a problem to solve, not a solved problem. Mirror's edge is different in this sense because it is able to marry bthat direct gameplay signalling with art style into one cohesive look

uhohnotgood.bsky.social @uhohnotgood.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
To play devil's advocate (with someone who I'm sure knows 100x more than me about this lol), yellow paint only works so well because it is usually incongruous with the image of whatever game it's in, but games are a visual art. The overall quality of those visuals drops if you over-leverage it

The union are (smartly) distinguishing their unionization efforts from sales/player engagement metrics. They're asking for money, which is more urgent. Everyone in this thread making this about consumer behavior are focusing on their own relationship with the product which doesn't help the union
020
uhohnotgood.bsky.social @uhohnotgood.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
As someone involved in unionization in a very different field: you're correct in pointing out that sales don't equal job security, but the inverse of that is that boycotts don't support job security either. Union protections do. Whether or not you want to buy the game is irrelevant to those efforts

It is kind of interesting that Americans crave derision from other, similar countries. American liberals in particular seem compelled to perform this kind of American anti-exceptionalism as if this is somehow meaningful to Europeans, although it's really for the edification of the American doing it
