2/ So, UFT members were outside the Billion Oyster Project's annual fundraising gala this week, to raise awareness about the employees' fight to hold a union vote as soon as possible. There were lots of pro-union supporters among the guests!

@uft.org @nysut.bsky.social, along with dozens of unions, civil rights groups and education advocates are urging @governor.ny.gov to say NO to the federal voucher scheme. Vouchers defund public schools at a time when our students need more resources, not less.

UFT Action @uftaction.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
@governor.ny.gov needs to oppose Trump’s voucher scheme. Similar programs have disproportionately benefited the private school elite, leaving public school students and taxpayers stuck with the bill. Tell Governor Hochul to #OptOutNow. #NoVouchersInNY www.cityandstateny.com/policy/2026/...

As Hochul weighs opting in to tax credit, teachers unions and school choice advocates vie for her ear
In a rare instance of agreement with the Trump administration, the governor reiterated her support for the federal scholarship tax credit.

Private schools can pick & choose which students they want. Public schools care for any child who comes through their doors. We must invest in strong, public education, not a voucher scheme that leaves students behind at the expense of taxpayers. @governor.ny.gov, #OptOutNow #NoVouchersInNY

Paraprofessionals know what’s working for each student and what’s not, by investing in the lives of the students they serve. That makes them an irreplaceable part of our public school system, and essential to special education. #RESPECTforParaprofessionals

UFT Action @uftaction.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
If our city wants to attract & retain the paraprofessionals our students depend on, they need to step up support. A starting salary of $32k/yr makes serving this city unaffordable and is causing a staffing shortage – impacting students who need critical services. #RESPECTforParaprofessionals

UFT Action @uftaction.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
NYC’s paraprofessionals are essential to getting special needs students the support they need. They deserve the dignity of a living wage - not for @mayor.nyc.gov to sue to block a well-deserved financial boost. #RESPECTforParaprofessionals

UFT Action @uftaction.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
Pattern bargaining is an injustice to lower-paid workers. Thanks to its use, starting wages of paraprofessionals are $32K - far below the poverty line. No wonder there is a dire para shortage in NYC schools. @mayor.nyc.gov, it’s time to give paras RESPECT. #RESPECTforParaprofessionals

Why is Mamdani suing the City Council?
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s office sued the City Council over legislation that would give paraprofessionals a one-time pay bump.

1/ Paraprofessionals are in crisis, and the RESPECT Check Law establishes a workforce stabilization payment to help fix that. City Hall's lawsuit seeking to block the law is just wrong – ultimately harming paras and their students, right as the school year approaches.
