A group of twelve people stands indoors in a rustic, wood-paneled room, posing in a line for a photo. Several people hold leafy branches or small plants. Most wear jeans; four wear matching red shirts, while others wear black, purple, gray, or blue shirts. Two people on the right appear to be children wearing purple and blue shirts. Folding tables behind and beside the group are covered with additional plants and branches. Large windows, fluorescent ceiling lights, a wooden floor, and potted greenery fill the room. A dark wooden plaque on the back wall features a bear and the words “FOREST RANGER.”A group of people stands in a sunlit pine forest with dense green understory and tall, straight tree trunks. In the foreground, a person in a light-colored long-sleeved shirt holds a long wooden measuring stick vertically, while another person in a gray shirt gestures toward it. Several others stand nearby holding similar wooden sticks, papers, or notebooks. Two people wear red shirts with a circular design, and one holds a clipboard or stack of papers. The measuring sticks and forest setting suggest an outdoor field activity. Dappled sunlight filters through the leafy canopy onto the people and forest floor.A group of people gathers around a table indoors, examining and documenting assorted green leaves and plant specimens. In the foreground, a person in a blue shirt and green cap reaches toward the specimens, while others in red and striped shirts look down at the table. Clipboards, lined paper, pencils, and plant-cutting tools are spread across the tabletop. The room has wooden walls and large windows overlooking dense green vegetation.A person stands outdoors in front of a softly blurred green background, holding a narrow vertical measuring stick in front of their face. The cream-colored stick has black measurement marks and numbers, with the words “FOOT LOSS” printed near the middle. The person has dark hair parted in the center and gathered into a long braid over one shoulder, and is wearing a bright red shirt and a pendant necklace. One hand grips the lower part of the measuring stick while the other arm extends toward the camera. The visible ruler markings include numbers such as 4, 10, 18, 28, 41, and 55.

Join our 14th Annual SFFGS Fall Social, Sept. 11, noon-3 p.m. in the N-Z breezeway. There will be SFFGS swag bags up for the taking with a drawing around 2 p.m., but prize-winners must be present. Come enjoy the outdoor games and freshly grilled deliciousness!
The image promotes the "14th Annual Fall Social" hosted by the University of Florida's School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatics Sciences. It features a colorful layout with a large blue fish and a leaf graphic. The title "FALL SOCIAL" is prominently displayed in bold orange letters. Below the title, the event details specify the date, time, and location as Friday, September 11, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Newins-Ziegler Breezeway.

The image includes several smaller photographs that depict various scenes from the event. On the left, a woman with glasses stands beside a display board titled "MARINE BIOLOGY CLUB," which features photographs and information related to marine biology. In the center, two attendees are seen filling their plates with food items from a table laden with colorful dishes, including fruits and pastries. To the right, a group of three women smile together, with one wearing a shirt that reads “NATIVE PLANTS.” There are also promotional posters in the background listing activities and clubs involved in the event, as well as text encouraging community building on campus.

The bottom of the image features a graphic of a hot dog and hamburger, and a list of offerings available at the social, including hamburgers, vegan burgers, hot dogs, fruit and vegetables, snacks, drinks, games, and information about student groups.

Grad and undergrad students — are you certifiable? SFFGS offers a wide range of certificates in environmental and natural resource subject areas that can help you further your career and gain the knowledge you need.
The image features a serene natural landscape with a group of five individuals walking along a dirt path in a wooded area. They are dressed in bright yellow jackets and dark pants, likely indicating they are involved in forestry or conservation work. Tall trees rise around them, characterized by their slender trunks and lush green foliage creating a canopy overhead. The sunlight filters through the trees, casting dappled light on the ground. To the right side of the image, there is an informational graphic that outlines graduate certificate programs offered by the UF/IFAS School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatic Sciences. This section includes program names, credit requirements, and an online format, along with a university logo and a QR code.

A chapter closes, and a new one begins. SFFGS Alumnus Update: From Diego Rocha, Ph.D., August 2026
A couple of days ago, I officially graduated from the University of Florida with my Ph.D. in Forest Resources and Conservation. There were so many challenges, plans that did not work out, and moments when I thought I couldn't keep going. There were also incredible opportunities, people who believed in me, and experiences that shaped the scientist and person I am today. Looking back, I feel like every single one of those experiences brought me to where I am now.

Education has transformed my life in ways I could not have imagined when I first started studying forestry as a 16-year-old in Brazil. I never thought I would be where I am today, and I am incredibly proud of how far this journey has taken me and grateful to everyone who has been part of it.

I begin the next chapter of my career as an Assistant Professor of Forest Resource Management at Stephen F. Austin State University. At SFA, I will have the opportunity to build my own research program, teach and mentor the next generation of forestry professionals, and continue exploring questions about forest health, management, and how forests respond to environmental change.

There is a lot to look forward to, and even more to learn. For now, I am grateful for everything that brought me here and excited to see where this next chapter takes me.The image depicts a graduate, Diego Rocha, standing confidently in front of the University of Florida's Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. The graduate is wearing a vibrant blue doctoral gown adorned with orange accents and features a blue tam cap. He has a broad smile, suggesting pride and happiness. The background shows a stylized stadium with the name "University of Florida" prominently displayed above in blue letters. In the foreground, palm trees can be seen, adding to the atmosphere of a sunny, celebratory day.

As the new semester begins, we are excited to hear about our recent grads and their accomplishments. Here's some words from UF Plant Pathology graduate student Tori Richardson who just earned her MS:
Transcribed Text:
“I’m overjoyed to share that I earned my Master of Science degree in Forest Resources & Conservation! This journey taught me so much. Not only do I have a deeper understanding of molecular tools, ecological research methodologies, and scientific writing, but I also learned what qualities make for a great scientist and how to ask important questions about the natural world. This degree also taught me how to persevere when experiments failed or coursework challenged me. I couldn’t have done it without the guidance of my mentor, Dr. Jiri Hulcr, or the support of my peers in the UF Forest Entomology Lab and Truffle Smith Lab, as well as encouragement from friends and family. There were also many scientific collaborators not mentioned here who served on my committee and contributed to my research, and I thank you all. I’m eager for the publications to come from our work. I’m also excited to employ my newfound skills as I begin a new chapter at UF Plant Pathology as a Ph.D. student this fall. Go Gators!”UF Plant Pathology graduate student Tori Richardson
