I always do the dumbest possible thing: draw on every n-th frame, otherwise exit early. So this can be a dumb integer counter, I don't even have to mess with actual timing values, except to accrue delta time for animation.

The arms race is unsustainable to the point of putting the entire economy at risk. This is an off ramp IMO if gov says: OpenAI and Anthropic get a license to provide safe inference to US households, even more reduced capabilities internationally, and "frontier" services to gov and political orgs.

If the market enters a tightly regulated phase it may not remain legal to offer inference at GPT 5.5 levels, even if a company had the resources to do that. Altman, Musk, and Amodei have all been calling on the gov to reclassify AI research similar to nuclear for years, precisely for that reason.

It's a huge win for Dario. Opus 4.8 < GPT 5.5 < Fable 5. So the legal ceiling will be GPT 5.5 or lower. This solves the compute crisis, especially for Anthropic. It alleviates the competitive pressure, because they and OpenAI can now enter their monopolistic era where they can finally start phoning it in, except for very lucrative gov contracts. Dario also gets to cash in from all the self-mythologizing due to the IPO without having to keep up an unsustainable level of capital expenditure. China has also effectively stopped the open weights export before Qwen could advance to frontier model performance. So open weights is basically dead in a market where only giant players can exist to begin with. Chinese and American governments hold all the cards now. Unless this pressure can jumpstart a true technological jump in open source, this is it. I was hoping for more time until we get to this point tbh.

I have a test I repeat every few months to see how far AI has come: ask it to port my OpenGL code to Vk, fails every time. New this time: claimed it was done after a minute, code worked perfectly. The secret: it opened the OpenGL window in the background and copied the output buffer to a Vk window ❤️
