'Meanwhile, a Financial Times report by...Gillian Tett offers an early sign of a return to...connective thinking...: one finance firm has shifted its hiring away from “AI-native” STEM graduates toward humanities students. In the financier’s words: “We want critical thinking, not just AI.”' 2/3

It’s 25 years since we lost Douglas Adams. I am happy to have been able to get a reference to him into this piece in the FT about why the humanities are essential www.ft.com/content/fbde...
It is 25 years since the death of Douglas Adams. He was prescient in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in
concluding that finding the answer to life, the universe and everything was not that difficult - it was 42. But the hard part was understanding the question. The humanities are here to help us make sense of the questions of our time.

As #UKHE managers have been falling over themselves to act upon AI bros' 'predicting' the future (i.e.: making their sales pitch and creating the 'need' in one swift action), they'll listen to this one well, right? RIGHT?!?!?! giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...

Given AI’s exponentially growing ability to solve well-defined, data-rich problems, it is plausible that employers will place more of a premium on the skills the humanities offer, such as critical and creative thinking. Anthropic’s co-founder Daniela Amodei recently said: “I actually think studying the humanities is going to be more important than ever . . . this idea that there are things that make us uniquely human — understanding ourselves, understanding history, understanding what makes us tick — I think that will always be really, really important.”

It would be ironic if universities cut these subjects just as demand turned a corner — switching from literature to AI-prompt engineering may turn out to have been a poor trade.
