Ryusuke Hamaguchi: Early Works Oct 17–Nov 22 | Free Hamaguchi’s “Drive My Car” won the Oscar for Best International Feature in 2022 and was the first Japanese film nominated for Best Picture. But well before this, he was busy making films that have rarely screened outside of Japan: ucla.in/3VDR3Sp

Within this map of California (circa 1885) are three inset maps that display soil types, temperature ranges, and geographical areas of California. Archivo Digital de las Lenguas Indígenas de la Amazonia (ARDILIA). This digital collection preserves and provides access to recordings of verbal art, including chants, narratives and ceremonial discourses, from three Indigenous peoples of the Colombian Amazon. Created between 1975 and 2006, many recordings were made by Indigenous people and elders and are vital for younger generations interested in linguistic and cultural revitalization. The Ricardo Montejano Collection: Social Movements and Mexican Rural and Native Cultures. Starting in the 1970s, Ricardo Montejano collected original field and studio recordings of voices from various populations in Mexico. The collection illuminates a history of social movements and Indigenous knowledge throughout the country while documenting the political and cultural realities of Mexican people. Voices of Pre-Industrial Siberia. This project digitizes, contextualizes and shares a collection of recordings of Indigenous people of the North and the Siberian Arctic. Dating from the 1920s to the 1980s, this large and unique collection of Indigenous voices had never been professionally digitized and was stored in poor conditions. Open reel-to-reel tape recorder on a wooden workbench.Afro-Indigenous Brazilian Struggles for Recognition. This archive was created by Vik Birkbeck and Adauto de Souza Santos (Ras Adauto), who began recording video in the early 1980s as activists in human rights movements, especially Afro-Brazilian, feminist and Indigenous movements. 90 years ago at the infamous 1936 Berlin Olympics, track and field athlete Jesse Owens became the star of the games, undermining Hitler’s intention to use the event as propaganda for the so-called “master race.” Owens was the first American to win 4 gold medals and broke Olympic and world records.

After three decades at the Archive, Jeffrey Bickel retired from his role as senior newsreel preservationist. Jeff supervised the preservation of more than one million feet of newsreels. He oversaw large-scale nitrate inspection, recanning, inventory, documentation and more: ucla.in/4vqlfMY
