Does Chris Bowen MinisterClimate Change Australia & COP31 President of Negotiations not understand that his goal of “keeping the Pacific safe” & “ensuring 1.5 to stay alive” is completely at odds w/ new coal mine or 21 other fossil fuel projects Australian has approved? #preCop

7/ Canada needs a national project built for the economy ahead: clean electricity, efficient homes, public transit, Canadian manufacturing and abundant renewable energy. No one owns the sun and wind. That is energy security.

6/ National unity cannot be built on pipelines that divide Canadians or LNG projects that lock us into decades more fossil fuel dependence. Energy security means freedom from the next oil and gas price shock & preparing our communities for the fires, floods and deadly heat

5/ And just two days ago, Carney announced LNG Canada 2. LNG Canada burned more fracked gas through flaring last year than any other project on earth. At times the flare has reached 90 metres high. So much for Canada’s claims about producing the “cleanest LNG.”

4/ This amount of oil production blows our climate targets. At a time when 1 person is dying from lethal heat on the planet every minute and wildfires are forcing our communities to run while they watch our towns burn. More oil and gas = more fires. It’s that simple. It’s physics

Tzeporah Berman @tzeporah.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
3/ And this isn’t just about whales. Expanding the world’s heaviest, most carbon-intensive oil means producing more fossil fuels for decades, when the science tells us we need to be moving in exactly the opposite direction. You don’t phase something out by building more of it.

Tzeporah Berman @tzeporah.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
2/ It would run to Roberts Bank, bringing supertankers through critical feeding and breeding habitat for endangered whales. More tanker traffic. More underwater noise. More risk of spills. For the disappearing southern resident orcas, the stakes could not be higher.

1/ So it’s official. Faced with a choice between whales and oil, our Prime Minister chose oil. Faced with a choice between a safe climate and more fossil fuel expansion, he chose oil again. Today, Mark Carney announced yet another mammoth oilsands pipeline. #cdnpoli #bcpoli 🧵

I read today someone criticizing the conference already saying it won’t produce a phase out plan or timelines. Of course not. Don’t be absurd. Santa Marta is a pivotal political and diplomatic platform, not a negotiating forum. I don’t expect it to produce any new, legally binding instrument itself.

History is made by those who show up. It’s a coalition of the ambitious and the willing forming here in a coal port town, in one of the first countries in the world to commit to no new oil, gas and coal expansion. This is not another talk shop—it’s the start of building the rules of the transition.

It’s true that many big producing countries will not be here. The absence of some countries doesn’t weaken this process—it explains why it’s necessary. The question is no longer should we phase out fossil fuels but who is ready to lead.
