Autism has long been linked to difficulties with Theory of Mind. But what exactly is driving these differences? And what happens in the brain? In our new preprint, we show that adaptive mentalization might be key. A 🧵 #CogSci #CogNeuro osf.io/preprints/ps...
Repeated Rock-Paper-Scissors task used to study adaptive mentalization, alongside a schematic showing increasingly sophisticated reasoning strategies, from responding to past actions to trying to guess the opponent’s prediction about one’s own next action

None of this would exist without Hang & Wenliang. Deepest thanks to both of them for making this long journey possible!!

We model this as a misspecified expansion prior meeting cognitive constraints: the internal model probabilistically grows with new observations, but more reluctantly as memory burden increases — a Distorted Economical Expansion process.

The most surprising result is perhaps that participants can’t even learn a simple structure such as a Gaussian. Instead, they reported 2~3 illusory clusters. More evidence didn't help them find the true structure, but pushed them even further away from it.

You'd think people prefer the simplest explanation of an uncertain world — Occam's razor. Our data says no, across 2 modalities, 2 tasks, 8 experiments: people often perceive illusory structure that isn't there and prefer moderate complexity. Out now in Nature Comms! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Human learning of probability distributions is biased toward moderate structural complexity - Nature Communications
Humans build internal models from online observations to adapt to new environments. Here, the authors show that individuals are biased towards building models with moderate structural complexity, rega...
