To steal, take, or deny someone's humanity is to levy a punishment worse than death. And traitors deserve no less.

A punishment reserved for only the most vile traitors. We need a version of that punishment. Not just taking their freedom, their wealth, but even their very name, even the very idea that they once existed to sully this world with their crimes and inhumanity. They truly become "nothing".

To get nerdy for a bit, there's a concept in the game lore of Warhammer 40K that is named. "Excommunicate Traitoris" (pseudo latin). The idea is that someone has so violated the very civilization we live in, that the only viable punishment is to strip from them the idea/concept of "existence".

And thus, to take and *revoke permanently* a person's freedom, well that is a far far FAR worse punishment than death. "Bury me with my ancestors that jumped from the boat, because they knew, death *was better* than bondage". If you never understood that quote, maybe now you do. On to traitors.

So, to take someone's freedom away from them is thusly a much worse punishment. To die is to affirm that final state of all humanity. But to live without freedom is to be kept, forcibly, away from that essential aspect of life. To lose your freedom as punishment is the principal of incarceration.

Death absolves them of any ability to regret, to lament, or to realize the error of their ways. No, it is not the "ultimate punishment". That title belongs to slavery. A dead person is in a sense, "free". Maybe an afterlife exists, maybe it doesn't, but, to the living the dead are all equals.

I mean guillotines, firing squad, or hang from the neck until dead. In general I oppose death penalties, but not because of altruism or the sanctity of life, though I also generally believe those concepts to be a true ideal. No, I oppose death penalties because it lets the criminal off *easy*.
