Whoever this was, he was skilled. Feet were exactly where they should be, grip firm but flexible. There was no choice, Mali had to capture the distance between them. He would make a mistake here at the end of the pole, his power draining with every drop of blood. And that would be the end of them both.

No one needed to convince Mali, he could feel the darkness swarming. There was so much more they needed to ask.
Again, he opened his mouth, but Mamir beat him to it. “Those men will be back. They are tainted with such cruel evil, it’s relentless.” His hands were now shaking, almost distractingly so. “They know you two are amongst the merchants guild.”

“Don’t you dare try and use that self-righteous magic on me. I don’t need to be pacified by you, not after what you took from me.” Then she threw a frown at him. One that spoke directly to a grim part inside him. One that constantly reminded Mali how pathetic he was. “My debt to you is paid."

Surrounded and hidden, Mali took out his three jewels, gripping tight as he whispered. “Show me Princess Annelise Elduserf.”
With the last syllable, his goddesses light engulfed him. Time slowed, and each heartbeat was excruciatingly loud. Through the throbbing pain, his eyes scanned the horizon for her fire’s glow. The man searched for her sanction - allowing him to come and capture her. Blood pumped, aching for him to run again. The man’s desires were as wild as the very animal his mask had depicted. Was he panting? It must have been the mushroom concoction. Yes, it had to be.

“It's a pleasure to meet you, Aaron.” After repeating his name, awareness hit her. That uptight speech pattern of hers was going to condemn her. Along with the modest dress she now wore, she would need a common name, and speech to match her new lower class mask. Only one name came to her mind, and she prayed it matched. “I’m Mae.”
Aaron took his seat, studying her carefully. The strong pronunciation earlier had obviously caught his attention. Only when the other man cleared his throat, did Aaron’s eyes leave her. “I’m Reed.” He made a slight dip of his torso, though he still remained on the log. “Pleasure to meet your acquaintance, your lady.”
The formal addressing had her back straightened. Though the princess took the traitorous involuntary movement and prolonged it. “Me? A lady?” It was high pitched, the syllables coming together in a murmur. Annelise pulled at the dirty hem of her skirt. “In this?” She then rounded off the impression with a giggle. “You’ve been in the woods too long to think me a lady.” Neither her nerves, nor competency allowed her to look towards Aaron. Out of both men, he gave off the most uncertainty.

As if in celebration of his finest achievement, the sun beamed through dense leaves. Even the thick line of trees along the well-travelled road couldn’t dull his splendour.
Days before his seventeenth birthday, a letter of acceptance had come to Mali. Being born into a family with a close connection to Vintela, the protection goddess, meant he had a good chance of being blessed with sacred guard abilities. Strong evidence of that claim came on a winter morning. He pulled his sister out of a frozen lake, its surface had given way to her meagre weight. Barely a boy of twelve years, the feat was larger than any man in their village could have performed.
