Local anti-corruption rules here explicitly state it's not bribery if you're just being polite!

Oh yeah, hotels/hostels. I would prefer to walk into those as well but most don't have a late reception, or a reception at all

I didn't even know you could make restaurant reservations online... I like to do things in person, until I moved to Estonia I even did bank transfers in person and had never bought tickets online for anything 😅

I never make reservations, except for some bus and train trips that are otherwise sold out fast/too expensive. I go to a cafe or cinema and if there is space available that's great, otherwise I go somewhere else. Maybe that's unusual now? But I never see online reservations for cafes here 😅

Nothing has ever made humans less creative and they have always had the same base level of intelligence, even in the worst times there are always people resisting those trying to suppress human flourishing

Steve is in the garden, smelling the flowers. It's been a peaceful day so far actually.
A color photograph shows Steve, a small brown otter wearing a colorful peace-sign harness and leash, leaning on an orange planter to sniff bright pink cyclamen flowers against a stone wall.

is it like how people engage less and less with hardware (compared to the 2000s when modifying/upgrading computers was much more common, let alone before that) and even OSes (many people no longer knowing basics of like, file management) ?

The fanfic shepherded readers that wanted to be as "smart" as Rationalist Harry to Less Wrong and read their "Sequences". I even found the group that way but didn't like their anti-religion views and so didn't stay for long. That was in 2014

There are problems with that approach as well if it's not carried out with an understanding of the local communities it's supposed to help. If you do it in a way that acts condescending and/or doesn't explain things properly, it can backfire badly. Wired wrote "The deaths of effective altruism"

Jute @typhlosion.pmd.social · 21/09/2026
The author notes had a lot about "if you want to be as smart as Harry, go to our website and read the 'sequences' ". It was a very serious work that just tried to be funny (in ways that often aged very poorly) and then gradually forgot about it, leaving not but weird anti-femimist morality tracts

It's like any country putting "democratic" in their official name, or people boasting about their influence or kindness: if any of that was real you wouldn't have to stress it because it would be obvious from your actions. Like in writing, you have to do more than telling and also show things
010
Jute @typhlosion.pmd.social · 21/09/2026
No it was "what if the protagonist was *rational* and *awesome*" and at first it even had some legitimate science in it before abandoning it soon after. It was always meant to make you want to join the Rationalists, though

Jute @typhlosion.pmd.social · 21/09/2026

In Teenage Exocolonist you have to get a bully to use a holographic therapy app (the only therapist ... died on the way to the planet) as a foundation for a stable therapist. And you can have pacifist friends who might struggle with armed colony defense, but let you do it.

it reminds me of Russia's occasional tendency to announce its attacks in the passive voice
010
Jute @typhlosion.pmd.social · 31/08/2026
I don't think you can say that about a conversation between someone arguing that indigenous people not wanting to live under a Russian dictatorship of cultural genocide is somehow making them the "real oppressors" and someone pointing out how horrible and morally bankrupt thinking that is
