Finally a good non-AI Notion update today. You can now control individual property access. Set access to "No access" by default to hide from everyone, then add Group overrides to extend access to specific people. Also nice: preview as!
Screenshot of a Notion "Property access" dialog for the "Readiness" property.

Left panel: Under "Default access" ("Applies to all people, agents, and connections"), the setting is "No access." Under "Exceptions" ("Give specific individuals different access than the default"), "Everyone with full access" has "Full access," and "ADMIN" has "Can view property & values." Below is an option to "Add a person, group, or person property." The footer shows a "Learn more" link and "Clear" and "Save" buttons.

Right panel: "Preview as" is set to "Benjamin Error," showing the result "Can't see property: Doesn't have access to this database."

Other topics: - Generating Notion workspaces w/TypeScript - Building mini apps using bound data with Custom Blocks - Connecting custom tools with Custom Agents - Securing workspaces for multi-player Notion AI use (though I'm not shy about saying I don't use Notion AI: my goal is harm reduction).
Notion AI can be quite powerful for organizations and individuals. It can give similar “skills” to everyone that traditionally only the programmer/nerd-types like myself used to have. Which also means that now everyone can have very powerful editing and creating tools at their fingertips. Lots of folks are finding their available “skill-sets” increasing daily as they discover more about how these tools work.
That being said, “Agentic AI” also makes it quite easy to:
Accidentally make changes to your data you didn’t intend to.
Get flawed information from the systems that impact decision- and sense-making.
Create extremely noisy data streams that create an abundance of busy work.
Quietly expose your confidential data to third parties.
If you decide to leverage Notion AI, we want to minimize these outcomes, and a lot of what we’ve

Building a series of Workers as examples. We've been showing students how to connect custom built tools to agents, and using oauth, sync, and webhooks to manage things from and outside of Notion. Example: my system for managing my SoundCloud -> syncing track metadata, metrics, managing playlists.

Working on October's "Coding with Notion" workshop. Many of the community are on board with coding agents, but I've seen (over numerous private workshops) a lot of folks are—even with these "skills"—struggling to finding their way though the developer platform, so I'm doing a "non-AI dev" series.

ISP was down most of the weekend so I ended up finishing the flooring and baseboards in the closet, which I was planning on putting off for ~5–10 years. Better than calling Telus this morning, anyway. Let's update my "Guide to the 10th, 11th, and 12th circles of Hell, or Telus Corporation" guide.
# Account details

The product we are paying for is called “Business Wireline.” You will not find this product name on the website, your account, nor your invoices.

**Business Wireline:** 1-800-361-3311

When you call Telus you will be fed into their AI assistant. Ask to “talk to a human” to be forwarded to the *general* support queue. Immediately declare “please direct me to the support line for Business Wireline”.

<aside>
⚠️

Note that the phone number below will feed you into this AI loop and there apparently is no longer a direct support number for business customers.

</aside>

**Service number:** 604-740-0137

<aside>
⚠️

*Note: our account has a phone number associated with it that is not our actual phone number! I have not had success with getting them to change it. Isn’t this fun?*

I'm a bit confused by the tutorial. Even changing the refund threshold to greater than the refund, it still shows quite low certainty that the issue was resolved when it was resolved, the customer was stoked, and a new machine was on the way? Am I misreading? 🤔

One of my fav games is Mysterium. On the surface, it's collaborative Clue, but really it's a game about interpretation and meaning-making. It's very fun, because you can play almost without rules and people genuinely enjoy the process of playing in the "chinese room". Story-building at its best.

Been quite a productive micro-farming year. Tons of tomatoes and peppers this year. And our backyard always has infinite lavender, rosemary, blackberries, etc. I smell great today. Today I'm making bundles for the neighbourhood post-harvest. Will make some lavender syrup for lattes later.

perhaps it's bad ux. I click "apply & restart" and nothing happens for minutes. it feels as if something is broken, but apparently it is downloading. after a couple minutes the *other* download button turned to "installing update". it was like this for hours last time. might just have to reinstall 🤷‍♂️

student asked me how I work with music in @notion.com so I shared my "music hq" dashboard/track mgmt and how I'm using workers to sync my soundcloud data and manage playlists and distribution. AI often feels like a drain on the core platform, but workers are a nice more deterministic distraction.

my fav point about llm-driven learning is risk/accountability becomes a primary lever of expertise, not so much INT. ex: "operate this fire pump to ensure your team's survival". easy to "learn" with an llm—intense in practice! wonder if agentic futures lead to higher-risk working envs for humans.

Been running "saturday sessions" where I teach an ad-hoc training on any topic recruits might be curious about. Today we got out the soon-to-be-retired "Engine 2" which has been retro'd for wildfire ops when needed. One of our only engines that can pump and roll. I will miss E2 when she's OOS. 🥺

my conspiracy-minded ass notices these patterns show up downstream in ux design as well. like this new "use agentic ai to filter and sort your database" in notion instead of, you know, using the filter and sort buttons. $0.39 in tokens. is it by design: the subtle nudges into additional token use?
what's our quest today? filter and sort data

Going to bust my butt to get my music/profile set up on @subvert.fm this wknd so I can nominate myself for their board of directors. I think as a musician and systems thinker who does a ton of volunteer work (firefighting, teaching, organizing), I think I'd be a great fit, though I'm not well known.
Do you want to run for Subvert's Board of Directors? This is your chance.

On Sept 19th, we are holding an election as part of our Annual General Meeting. We want to invite you to participate.

Our Board of Directors is made up entirely of elected members. Just artists, labels, supporters, and workers, elected by their peers.

If you're a member of Subvert, you can run.

Really the star is the sweetness/umami pairing of the sauces and lao gan ma. The first time I had lao gan ma i had to go back and look at the person on the bottle because, "I need some eye contact if you're going to eff my mouth like that". abs the best chili sauce.
