Just a reminder that sororities are generally banned from having alcohol on their premises, leading to the parties involving alcohol being held at fraternities. www.businessinsider.com/most-sororit...

Most sororities have to follow a sexist and potentially dangerous rule that gives men on college campuses power
Most sororities are not allowed to throw events with alcohol.

I am with you. Though it's still possible that I would pay to see him in back to back debates with Vance, Rubio and Hegseth. It's probably as close to bloodsport as I get.

Sometimes teaching is just so much fun. First serious day of programming for the new program, and I set them doing some practical problems with a couple of gotchas as pair programming exercises. And they were so into it - just warms the cockles of my old stringy heart.

It's a stack wood, pet kitties sort of day. (Okay, and writing evals, and clearing out the closet so it can be cleaned, and maybe making shredding chicken if I have time...)

Hegseth should be on the list. (I'm not saying he's appealing, but I think he thinks he's setting himself up to run.)

My department (Biology at Emory) is hiring for a teaching track position! These are stable, well-respected, long-term positions with a path to promotion and ppl often staying for decades. The dept is wonderfully supportive and filled with amazing humans (faculty + staff) apply.interfolio.com/191814

I teach at an experimental college -Evergreen - which has taken an approach much like this. (We're also public.) It's not impossible. But we're small, and not especially research focused. (Many of us are engaged in research, but it's not central to how we're are evaluated for tenure.)

I mostly consider my family to be fractally horrible. Zoom out, zoom in, present, go back in time... Which isn't too say there aren't some good people in it, and people who did some really good things. Mostly we're just not boring.

The utility of racial supremacism lies in the belief that there is some innate quality to one race that elevates it above all others, regardless of any lack of achievement, merit or aesthetic appeal. Supremacism is literally and specifically an ideology for losers

She was a little skinnier, but not even that much, and her coat was in excellent shape. I suspect my neighbor used to have mice. (She spent her first 10 months or so as a community cat...)

Yeah, that does it for me. Though I had some formative early cat trauma. (That I was thinking a lot about recently after one of my cats got out when she wasn't supposed to be, and was lost for eleven days. ...it turned out she was locked in a neighbor's basement, and was surprisingly fine.)

Not to mention all the men who publish the work of their wives, female students, collaborators, etc. without credit. "... And to my wife, who typed the manuscript." Hell, instances of this were mentioned in passing in department seminars at my last university.

This thread clearly needs visuals, so. This is an almost full bobbin of shetland lambswool, from a lamb named Rae, raised by one of the most hardcore 4H kids I ever met. I've suinted and carded the wool, and it's been an absolute joy to spin.

Kazakh is fun because you need to be comfortable with Arabic script, Cyrillic and Roman characters. (Runic scripts are also helpful.) But after Chinese, that part wasn't such a big deal. Phonetic FTW!!!

I took the class (and was the only undergrad) and was hooked. (Back in the day I thought I was going to go work for the State dept. But my fiance didn't want to follow me around the world, and I was young and idealistic, so I stayed home and went into software engineering.)

Kazakh was actually the one I spent the most time with. It was totally random - back in my undergrad days I was doing Chinese and poli econ, and some time in I decided to take an elective. So I opened the course catalog and found "Heroic Oral Epics of the Turkic Peoples of Central Asia"

I was going with the root of lingual... but I'm pretty open. (For me, Chinese, a bunch of Central Asian languages I'm super rusty on, and then a handful of things I can read or bumble my way through. Why didn't I study languages of places I want want to live more?)

Definitely hit me up if you're in the area! (I'm a little distracted right now, as I'm putting a proposal in to NASA with a friend to continue the bio-inspired navigation in space project I started when I postdocced with him. Which sounds cool, but... text. Also, tech translation.)

I got into masonry heaters somewhat accidentally - I had a wood burning brick oven built into the kitchen of the first house I owned (using an existing masonry box) and it turned out to be able to heat the house for twenty-four hours. I hope to buy a house soon, and put a Tulikivi in it.

The main character is from the coast, where there was less timber and different weather (wetter, but less cold), and they use something more like cob. And somewhat less elaborate masonry heaters, but again, a few generations back no one had enough firewood, so the tech is used in various forms.

That would make a ton of sense! And the students who have already expressed interest to this class (which isn't approved yet - my schedule got blown up for that quarter, and is being rebuilt) would enjoy it a lot, I think.
