I’ve been a freelancer for 20+ years. I haven’t been an in-house artist since Disney Sydney. Yes, freelance talent is financially easier for a studio, but in-house talent is CRUCIAL for holding an IP/project/brand together.

art is often a lot less about making stuff up from your brain whole cloth and more like arranging observations and editing them into delightful and insightful patterns; worry less about invention and originality and more about sincerity and clarity

So the reward for a company having an almost miraculously aspirational commercial and artistic year at the box office is to be bought by the one company with the most incentive (and seeming desire) to wipe movie theaters off the map? We’d almost be better off if Warner Bros.’s 2025 slate had tanked.

The Cold, Cruel Logic Behind Netflix Potentially Buying Warner Bros.

Buying one of the five remaining theatrical heavyweights for the purpose of removing the most aspirational theatrical distributor from the board would be in line with the streamer's recent history.

Wow it's been so long since we started the movie, I almost forgot about the original hospital scene. Way before we ever dreamed of a Zootennial Gala, this was from a bit grittier version of the film.

This just isn't true, and it's a shame the company has its employees attempting this lie in public. It's an insult to our intelligence, it's offensive to our craft, and it's downright disgusting to the entire industry
I know you can't sway business decisions, but make sure we're heard

Friendly reminder that the Annie Awards do not have any categories related to CG cinematography. Not for previs, not for layout, not even for lighting. That's practically a third of all artists that work on a CG project, and I'd say they deserve to be recognized!

Wondering what a CG Layout Artist does all day? Here's three clips from my work on Encanto. We block out a rough 3D visualization of the scene w/ characters, cameras, lighting, and effects. This serves as a working template for all other departments to finalize on top of. The essence of filmmaking!

I guarantee you that the people unwilling to go out hunting for new content today are the same ones that would have stayed at home 30 years ago and listened to a Top 40 radio station. You can lament losing the thrill of the hunt, but obscure content is more accessible than ever. That's pretty cool.

I absolutely can see the imitation-is-the-best-form-of-flattery argument, but if it was just about seeing a familiar story in a new style, we would see remakes in the opposite direction too. There's an implicit value statement when the only thing you throw away is the animation itself.

The HTTYD trilogy really pushed Dreamworks Animation onto a whole new level cinematically. They got * Roger Deakins * as a visual consultant, for crying out loud. But with such visually rich source material, I just don't even understand where else there is to go, visually. youtu.be/5lzoxHSn0C0
