Waddle’s film from this past week was some of my favorite. Got to see his deep bag vs. press man, but the best part was watching him sell pick plays / clear outs to open up opportunities for others. Ultimate team player

3 loss scenarios aren't worth discussing.
000
Tyler DeSena @tylerdesena.bsky.social · 18/11/2024
2 loss scenarios took a major hit with DEN's win over ATL today. Losses to the Packers + Texans put Miami at 52% chance given today's results, but if the Broncos lost to the Falcons, that number would be 68%. Denver is THE team to root against as of now.

Tyler DeSena @tylerdesena.bsky.social · 18/11/2024
Winning 2 of those games is the key. Even if they lose to HOU (the worst 1 loss scenario due to AFC tiebreakers) , chances jump to 93%. If that loss comes to the Packers or 49ers, chances jump to 96% and 97% respectively.

Tyler DeSena @tylerdesena.bsky.social · 18/11/2024
New York Times has the Dolphins at a 15% chance to make the postseason with updated Week 11 results (and an assumption of a Chargers win). If you pick them to win against Patriots, Jets 2x, and Browns, you are left with a 61% chance that changes based on picks vs. GB, HOU, & SF.

Vegas' ability to create traffic and generate quick hitters outside has been a disaster for Miami. Bowers eats too much space vs. Zone, can't be guarded in man.

Potentially the most impressive part is how nobody has gotten anxious. McDaniel, Tua, even Reek. Well. Oiled. Machine.

This has become practice for Miami attempting execution-based offense in the face of defenses keeping their safeties so high they can’t keep going to Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle as much as they did last year. This sort of positive play after play, patient and consistent execution has been missing.

I know a lot of people are going to get on Mike McDaniel for that end of half drive but the real issue was Tyreek Hill not getting out of bounds on that first play. The final play, the idea is simply to force the defense to play clean and not get a penalty that puts you in long FG range.

There was a brief period there where I was watching QBs with an eye towards Miami being in that market. Tua coming back and playing the best ball of his career changes that, but I thought I’d share my thoughts here ahead of this college football Saturday. My top guy is Cam Ward, but you knew that 🧵

I'm willing to see a game that COULD age very well... potentially do so. There was gonna be more to this thread about Weaver, but I'll leave it at this: Watch Jalen Ramsey play. Dude lives to run wildly into the backfield the 3 times a game he gets to blitz, and we're getting to see it. Buy in >

Tyler DeSena @tylerdesena.bsky.social · 17/11/2024
I'm willing to see how this one pans out, especially considering this is a team that likes their chances at a playoff run, isn't looking at a teardown, and isn't going to have a home-run draft pick fall in their lap because they (very likely) won't be in the top 10.

Tyler DeSena @tylerdesena.bsky.social · 17/11/2024
signs of change in that category. Tua's pressure patterns are changing, and even better... IMPROVING. You know you're not getting Allen/Mahomes, but that's not what they're paying for. They're looking for that steady, gradual growth we've seen, and with teams moving off QBs SO early...

that's more than enough to keep defenses on their toes, while also scrapping to get enough of those big plays they're gonna lack if teams keep selling the farm to stop them. THAT is exactly the long term development you're looking for if you're Miami. It's gonna take time, but there's...

Tua's ability to create explosives last week, and big third down plays to OBJ and Mostert (clearly ancillary pieces) brings a whole new threat to defenses. The variance is something to improve (some of those sacks he took were gnarly), but if he's gonna hit on those with any effectiveness...

Mike McDaniel's solution to both of these early on? Devon Achane. Screens, run game, and using speed to eat up yards on the edges. And that will work to an extent, as we've seen. Tua's quick trigger combined with McDaniel's screen design bring some level of effectiveness. However...

Tyreek, even with Tua in the lineup, isn't hitting those deep balls he was getting last year. Which means you have to: A: eat the yards you can. B: Manufacture those explosives in other ways.

Tyler DeSena @tylerdesena.bsky.social · 17/11/2024
Tua did enough last year to nearly permanently keep teams in 2-high. They were one of, if not, the best deep ball team in football, and regardless of what you think of the end of 2023, the tape shows other teams disagree. This means you're not getting the same volume of explosives.

Tyler DeSena @tylerdesena.bsky.social · 17/11/2024
And Tua had a subpar first half. Protection (specifically up the middle) was a mess, timing was a disaster, and there were some woes in play extension. But that second half, especially in that last category, showed something Miami can desperately use.
100
Tyler DeSena @tylerdesena.bsky.social · 17/11/2024
On top of that, Tua is seeing SO many teams operate in a similar way. 2-high, conservative coverages, with some teams throwing 2-man or jams into the mix to throw off timing. Look at the Rams. NextGenStats had that as the most 2-high a team has played in a game in the NGS era.

Tyler DeSena @tylerdesena.bsky.social · 17/11/2024
On top of that, Tua has 100% turned a corner from the game management perspective. That game against the Bills was hyper efficient, against a team that has BEGGED you to throw into tight coverage downfield. And Tua has struggled with that. He's gotten antsy. Until now. That was a turning point.

"in your face" as Campbell is SO important. And it works wonders when your QB also happens to be the type who has elite production after INTs and has come back from several career ending injuries (and a career ending coaching staff but that's not the point). Think that helps when you're 2-6?

Tyler DeSena @tylerdesena.bsky.social · 17/11/2024
McDaniel is a players coach. That's fairly simple. That's a major reason why it didn't work with Fangio. And that means you're not seeing an Alpha CEO (Dan Campbell) type of HC having a game managing presence on the field. Having an extension of your style, especially when it's not as...

You hear the Shanahan-tree head coaches having QB's who are extensions of the coaching staff. Think Purdy in SF. And while it was obvious from day one that Tua/Mike were one in the same, it's so clear that Tua relays that confidence that McD placed in him onto the whole team.
100
Tyler DeSena @tylerdesena.bsky.social · 17/11/2024
It's clear they hit a wall with Tua out, but with him back in, it's so clear how Mike McDaniel's confidence in him, combined with Tua's own (morale?) (it factor?) 'I'm not sure what to call it' has kept the team, and specifically that offense, believing they have a chance.

First off, DeShon Elliott can talk all he wants, and I'm not the one in the locker room, but I am very impressed by the level of buy-in on this team, and how clearly that relates to Tua's presence. Team had 2 straight backbreaking losses (AZ and BUF) and were focused on their IMPROVEMENT!? What?

Miami had a very narrow path to walk this off season, based on the players they were set to lose via injury or free agency. Had it not been for the mismanagement of the backup QB position, we'd probably be having very different conversations about the job GM Chris Grier has done.
