There’s something strangely uncanny about Kevin Hart’s roast and the demise of American culture and hegemony. It’s a deplorable display of a celebration of all the worst parts of that culture over the last few years. The clear passivity of horror displayed there. No sympathy for any brutality at all

The undoing of the American Empire, the end of the American hegemony, all happening at the hand of the president of the United States. Perfect irony yet totally expected. It feels like it was the only way it could have happened. The total manifestation of American Ego, stupidity, and selfishness. 👌

This would be a great time for a real leftist party to emerge in BC. Conservatives in shambles and the NDP are alienating their base… let’s gooooo.

The competitive market should be treated like a privilege. If companies cannot compete as the ideal dictates; that is, to bring prices down and create better standards/innovation, they should become nationalized public corporations with profit going back to the people.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

AI is not designed to answer questions, it is designed to generate an answer. It’s going to take a lot of people a long time and a lot of wasted money to understand how different those two things are.

Say it after me: Chat GPT is not a search engine. It does not scan the web for information, it just generates statistically likely sentences. You cannot use it a search engine, or as a substitute for searching. Now. Please never use an LLM for information searches ever again.

I keep catching strays from "technology is neutral" people, so let's set things straight. 1) Technology is not neutral, especially the subset of technology called "algorithms" 2) The form-factor that makes a technology into a tool is not neutral 3) How tools are productized is not neutral [rant]

Lots of uproar and confusion about how it will be possible for Elon to sort through the millions of federal workers emails about their jobs from the weekend. Obvious answer? AI. Which should scare workers. We’re pairing neoliberal austerity with techo-monarchy/oligopoly. This should surprise nobody.

The use of AI as a source of what people think of as “reliable” information paired with the destruction of institutions of research and knowledge in the U.S. is truly terrifying and will not end well.

A very small part of me hopes consciousness can be emulated in AI purely with the hope that it will experience debilitating migraines. Hell, give it a body too so it can know what nerve pain feels like. And fuck with its eyes so it gets visions stains and auras.

Jagmeet Singh and the NDP MUST make a clear commitment to implement proportional representation. I know electoral reform is not a #1 issue compared to prices and housing, but it matters to the NDP base, and also to soft Liberal voters The NDP needs to lead on the issue NOW.

The ascetic element of AI stands out to me so strongly. We have a system built on the insufficiency and denial of humanity, and yet people think it will be benevolent. A system whose essence is literally human inferiority will never support humanity.

A ridiculous debate. The only way AGI will ever come into existence is if you shift the definition of AGI, just as we have done with AI to something profoundly narrower, or you bullshit it. Altman is a proprietor of both. www.theverge.com/2024/12/9/24...

Calling algorithms AI is dangerous and we should stop doing it. It’s a category mistake and a fallacy of calling a point on the perceived trajectory the thing itself. It’s misleading to the public and the algorithms being called “AI”. AI does not exist.
