Legislation & threats in TX are leading to over compliance & mass censorship. Librarians are being forced to quietly (often secretly) remove hundreds, sometimes thousands of books or risk losing their jobs. The educational needs of students isn’t even being considered in much of the decision making.

Parents are not driving censorship. Parents don’t want to ban books. Parents have real concerns about their children’s education & well-being and it isn’t non existent“unicorn genitals,” in children’s books.

Texas Senate Bill 13 allows anyone (including Dan Patrick and Bonnie Wallace) to formally challenge books in the school district in which they live. Every district should respond to every request or demand to remove any library book, by following their EFB Local library materials policy.

The first book to stand out on the list is Night, by Elie Wiesel. A book about a teenager’s survival in Nazi Concentration Camps. In June, this book was added to the SBOE mandated reading list for all Texas High Schoolers. 🤔 We don’t think it’s dirty, filthy, or pornographic./8

We’ve gathered some of the most ridiculous books from the list. But before you go through our thread, listen to language they use in the press conference. The threats are meant to intimidate districts & librarians into removing thousands of stories from our schools./5

‼️Texas- we need your help‼️ Extremists on the State Board of Education are rallying supporters from all over the state to travel to Austin on Monday, to speak in support of their comically bad State Mandated K-12 Reading Lists and ideologically infused (white-washed) Social Studies TEKS revisions.

The State of Texas is reportedly threatening to take over and disband our elected State Board of Education if members refuse to pass TEA/Morath’s preferred mandatory ELA reading list. The reply that SBOE member, Pam Little, is sending constituents lays it out pretty clearly.
Screenshot of an email from Texas SBOE Member, Pam Little, to a constituent (name redacted) that reads:

._____-__ Forwarded message--..-----
From: Little, Pam
Subject: Re: sboe mandatory reading list

I agree with you and we did cut the list down considerably, however I still feel it is too long. Even though the SBOE is tasked with this list in reality it is the Commissioner who controls it. The SBOE does not have any staff so we had to rely on TEA staff, ie the commissioner to draft the list. Then the commissioner goes to the legislature and tells them to send us a letter that this is what they intended in HB1605 and
encourage us to pass it. Then there are threats that if we don't do as the lege has instructed the lege will disband the SBOE.
The commissioner met with each board member to "sell" the list to them.

That's the reality unfortunately! I suggest you write your house representative and state senator and the House and Senate Pub Ed committees.

🚨Deer Park ISD: Show up and speak up for your school libraries and students’ freedom to read on Monday, April 27. Don’t let TX House Rep Briscoe Cain and his entitled “demands” to ban school library books he doesn’t like, be the only voice your board hears.

This data from @amlibraryassoc.bsky.social 💯 tracks with our experience in Texas. Poll 100 parents volunteering at their kids’ public school- MAYBE 3 of them will name “inappropriate library content” as a problem, a concern, a worry. www.ala.org/bbooks/book-...
Graphic from the American Library Association: 92% of all book challenges in 2025 were initiated by pressure groups and government officials.

Here’s a script in case it’s helpful.
Image of text that reads: Here’s a script in case it’s useful:
“Hi, my name is {state your name}. I’m a constituent in {state your city/zip code}.

I’m calling to ask Representative {insert your US House Representative’s name here} to vote NO on H.R. 7661. This law will open the door to book bans and censorship across the country.

{Optional} Instead, I ask Representative {insert your US House Rep’s name here} to vote YES on H.R. 6440, the Right to Read Act which would increase funding for public school libraries, and support efforts to improve literacy rates.

Thank you for your consideration.”
