It's worth pointing out that the Water Temple is a real double edged dungeon. On one hand, it makes use of lateral thinking more than any other dungeon and is better for it. On the other, pausing the game every few seconds is a genuine pace killer and worth criticising the dungeon design for.

Uncanny valley effect. I think the Mansion in OG RE1 is the same kinda vibe for me, even if it's pre-rendered. The weird, almost green screen lighting of that game created such a striking sense of place that it helped me to remember the entire layout all these years later.
