Today is the 81st anniversary of the birth of #RadioAstronomy in Australia! 📡 It grew out of radar tech built here in Sydney during WWII. As the war ended, military activity shifted to research, investigating the strange 'noise' and 'interference' coming from the Sun. 📸 J. Messer/NSW G.R.

😆 I did a trip recently ONLY two flights and longest was ONLY 11 hours I was like omg piece of cake. just be sure to sleep, those flights usually get in like 8am Sydney time, you get good sleep on the plane you then you’re on the right time when you land helps heaps.

More here. Chandra and Fermi also gone. Probes cancelled (so much work for nothing). Hard to fathom why any sane person would do this, and hoping that there is a sane majority in Congress.

Is this higher than normal? By how much? It sounds like a good thing but as at least an astronomer if there’s no grad places for the many seeking them, is that good ? Usually in times of bad economy we have more seeking grad school than there are places

#paperday We have used the gas trails of jellyfish galaxies to trace the ICM small-scale motions. We find a turbulence-like spectrum extending below the expected ICM dissipation scale, suggesting that the ICM viscosity is less than 10% of the Spitzer value. More at arxiv.org/abs/2411.07034

Sometimes yes. Radio halos tend to be centrally peaked and fall off radially and quite coincident with the cluster X-rays but things like shockwave relics or agn jet plasma will be less correlated with X-ray. So depends on the physical /particle acceleration mechanisms at play
010
Tessa Vernstrom @tvern23.bsky.social · 17/11/2024
We had hoped to see some diffuse emission from the clusters but alas no. Lots of giant & mini halos have been discovered in clusters in the radio but “lots” here means order ~100 where we know thousands of clusters

Tessa Vernstrom @tvern23.bsky.social · 17/11/2024
But I really if it works, the polarised intensity source counts a function of the total intensity source counts and you could fit for the that dependence as function of flux density
100
Tessa Vernstrom @tvern23.bsky.social · 17/11/2024
Well P(D) uses the image histograms to forward model the histograms and it’s hard for polarisation to go from source count to histogram of Polarised intensity because it’s square root sum of squares of the histogram of stokes Q and U so it’s transforms on the histograms I couldn’t figure out …

Tessa Vernstrom @tvern23.bsky.social · 17/11/2024
I spent a lot of time on it and it sort of worked on simulated date with frequency as the second axis, but then I tried to polarisation as the second axis and it broke me … I’d still maybe like to write up the frequency one if I ever find the time

1- can the radio background be constrained with the SZ effect or radio SZ effect 2- not so much an odd theory but new method no had gotten to work is 2D P(D) - that is a probability of deflection or confusion analysis in multiple simultaneous dimensions — it is my white whale
