🩸🏚️ Hungerstone - Kat Dunn Kind of a slow pace but really comes together at the end for a satisfying payoff. For a Carmilla reimagining, it could have used more Carmilla but I loved the arc Lenore went through! Highly recommended for fans of Carmilla and all things vampire
It’s the height of the industrial revolution and ten years into Lenore’s marriage to steel magnate Henry, their relationship has soured. When Henry’s ambitions take them from London to the remote British moorlands to host a hunting party, a shocking carriage accident brings the mysterious Carmilla into their lives. Carmilla, who is weak and pale during the day but vibrant at night. Carmilla, who stirs up something deep within Lenore. And before long, girls from the local villages fall sick, consumed by a terrible hunger...
As the day of the hunt draws closer, Lenore begins to unravel, questioning the role she has been playing all these years. Torn between regaining her husband’s affection and the cravings Carmilla has awakened, soon Lenore will uncover a darkness in her household that will place her at terrible risk.

💣🏜️ Coyote vs. ACME (2026) Actually bonkers that WB had a worthy successor to Who Framed Rodger Rabbit up their sleeves and almost shelved it for a tax write off. I’m so glad this movie not only lived to see the light of day but is doing well in the box office. It genuinely deserves it.

Bl/ood over Bright Ha/ven - dnf 🤷‍♀️ A lot of cool ideas here and I love the magic system but it felt like every other chapter was a giant exposition dump mixed with sociology 101. Might pick this up again at some point but I struggled to connect with any of the characters and the plot was nonexistent

🏛️🌊 Piranesi - Susanna Clarke Very strange and dreamlike and a fun mystery to unravel. Piranesi you strange little man I’m so charmed by your eccentricities. Genuinely in love with the world Clarke created here. The Beauty of the House is immeasurable; its Kindness infinite.
From the New York Times bestselling author of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, an intoxicating, hypnotic new novel set in a dreamlike alternative reality.

Piranesi's house is no ordinary building: its rooms are infinite, its corridors endless, its walls are lined with thousands upon thousands of statues, each one different from all the others. Within the labyrinth of halls an ocean is imprisoned; waves thunder up staircases, rooms are flooded in an instant. But Piranesi is not afraid; he understands the tides as he understands the pattern of the labyrinth itself. He lives to explore the house.

There is one other person in the house-a man called The Other, who visits Piranesi twice a week and asks for help with research into A Great and Secret Knowledge. But as Piranesi explores, evidence emerges of another person, and a terrible truth begins to unravel, revealing a world beyond the one Piranesi has always known.

🐦‍⬛🌲 Wildwood - Colin Meloy My mom had this book on her shelf for years and I wanted to give it a go before the upcoming adaptation. Very fun Labrynth meets Narnia with a PNW flavor.I love my country Portland Oregon!!
In Wildwood, Prue and her friend Curtis uncover a secret world in the midst of violent upheaval--a world full of warring creatures, peaceable mystics, and powerful figures with the darkest intentions. And what begins as a rescue mission becomes something much greater as the two friends find themselves entwined in a struggle for the very freedom of this wilderness. A wilderness the locals call Wildwood.
Wildwood captivates readers with the wonder and thrill of a secret world within the landscape of a modern city. It feels at once firmly steeped in the classics of children's literature and completely fresh at the same time. The story is told from multiple points of view, and the book features more than eighty illustrations, including six full-color plates, making this an absolutely gorgeous object.

📖🐊 Notes of a Crocodile - Qiu Miaojin My favorite books are ones where the entire cast is gay and dysfunctional and this definitely delivered. Really nailed how isolating the lesbian experience can feel but how we much survive and be our best selves.
Set in the post-martial-law era of late-1980s Taipei, Notes of a Crocodile is a coming-of-age story of queer misfits discovering love, friendship, and artistic affinity while hardly studying at Taiwan's most prestigious university. Told through the eyes of an anonymous lesbian narrator nicknamed Lazi, this cult classic is a postmodern pastiche of diaries, vignettes, mash notes, aphorisms, exegesis, and satire by an incisive prose stylist and major countercultural figure.

Afflicted by her fatalistic attraction to Shui Ling, an older woman, Lazi turns for support to a circle of friends that includes a rich kid turned criminal and his troubled, self-destructive gay lover, as well as a bored, mischievous overachiever and her alluring slacker artist girlfriend.
Illustrating a process of liberation from the strictures of gender through radical self-inquiry, Notes of a Crocodile is a poignant masterpiece of social defiance by a singular voice in contemporary Chinese literature.

👻🗡️ As I Descended - Robin Talley Back on my “sapphic Shakespeare retelling” bullshit, this time it’s Macbeth set in a haunted southern boarding school. Really liked the creepy atmosphere, though I think the ghosts’ involvement hurt the story more than added to it in some cases
Maria Lyon and Lily Boiten are their school’s ultimate power couple—but one thing stands between them and their perfect future: campus superstar Delilah Dufrey. Golden child Delilah is a legend at exclusive Acheron Academy, and the presumptive winner of the distinguished Cawdor Kingsley Prize.

But Delilah doesn’t know that Lily and Maria are willing to do anything—absolutely anything—to unseat Delilah for the scholarship. After all, it would lock in Maria’s attendance at Stanford—and assure her and Lily four more years in a shared dorm room.

Together, Maria and Lily harness the dark power long rumored to be present on the former plantation that houses their school. But when feuds turn to fatalities, and madness begins to blur the distinction between what’s real and what’s imagined, the girls must attempt to put a stop to the chilling series of events they’ve accidentally set in motion.

Read like a fucking book
WHAT IS BRAVERY?

Bravery is not the absence of fear; rather, it's the drive to keep moving in spite of it. Where others would give up when faced with a seemingly impossible challenge, it shines by leading the charge.

It tends to look like a willingness to be the first one to speak, the first one to make a choice, the first one to pursue its wishes.
Brave people are frequently the ones who make the gears of time turn: they'd much rather be hurt than sit idly by to avoid pain.Your second-strongest virtue is KINDNESS, at 61%.

Due to KINDNESS' wish to help others, the Brave who have it as their secondary virtue are usually making sure that the people they care about know just how much they would like to help - whether they ask for it or not.

These people will immediately intervene to share the burden of sorrow or to help figure out a solution to a problem, even before understanding if there's anything they can do in the first place.

🪽💀 Between Two Fires - Christopher Buehlman Ironically, I was listening to this as an audiobook while I was driving between two wildfires. Anyway this absolutely lived up to the hype, I was locked in from the tournament scene in the beginning. My friends and I have a running joke that this book
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm—that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict.

Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon. There, she tells Thomas, she will fulfill her mission to confront the evil that has devastated the earth, and to restore to this betrayed, murderous knight the nobility and hope of salvation he long abandoned.

As hell unleashes its wrath, and as the true nature of the girl is revealed, Thomas will find himself on a macabre battleground of angels and demons, saints, and the risen dead, and in the midst of a desperate struggle for nothing less than the soul of man.

✍️🪓 Misery - Stephen King I feel very lucky to have gone into this blind besides knowing the basic premise. I genuinely didn’t know where this was going to go and it was TENSE. Spend enough time in fandom spaces and you encounter hundreds of would-be Annie Wilkes.
The #1 New York Times bestseller about a famous novelist held hostage in a remote location by his "number one fan." One of "Stephen King's best...genuinely scary" (USA TODAY).
Paul Sheldon is a bestselling novelist who has finally met his number one fan. Her name is Annie Wilkes, and she is more than a rabid reader--she is Paul's nurse, tending his shattered body after an automobile accident. But she is also furious that the author has killed off her favorite character in his latest book. Annie becomes his captor, keeping him prisoner in her isolated house.
Annie wants Paul to write a book that brings Misery back to life--just for her. She has a lot of ways to spur him on. One is a needle. Another is an axe. And if they don't work, she can get really nasty.

🌧️🏚️ Private Rites - Julia Armfield Went from A Midsummer Night’s Dream to “King Lear and his dyke daughters” (actual quote) and all the whiplash that entails. Julia Armfield tore my heart out last year with Our Wives Under The Sea and she’s outdone herself with a gayer, soggier, sadder novel.
It’s been raining for a long time now, for so long that the lands have reshaped themselves and the cities have retreated to higher storeys. As old places have disappeared, arcane rituals have crept back into practice. Sisters Isla, Irene and Agnes have not spoken in some time when their estranged father dies. A famous architect revered for making the new world navigable, they find themselves uncertain of how to grieve his passing when everything around them seems to be ending anyway.

As the sisters come together to clear the grand glass house that is the pinnacle of his legacy, they begin to sense that the magnetic influence of their father lives on through it. Soon it becomes clear that others have taken an interest in both his estate and them, and that perhaps their inheritance may not be theirs alone.

🧚‍♂️✨ Puck - Samantha Allen Wanted something lighter to round out my pride month reads and I’m always a sucker for modern Shakespeare retellings. This delivered on both, though I found myself much more invested in Puck’s friendship with Mia than the actual romance we got. Happy for some OCD rep though
In this A Midsummer Night’s Dream-inspired romcom, Puck is a reality show producer and agent of chaos with a talent for bringing people together . . . and tearing them apart.

Meet Puck: the nonbinary, thirty-year-old mastermind behind Homewreckers, a dating show that puts troubled couples through hell—with a little help from their exes. Used to being the one pulling the strings, it shocks Puck when their life undergoes a plot twist of its own and their college roommate Mia announces her engagement to her ex’s best friend, Damon. Having only recently broken up with longtime-boyfriend Zander, and never having had much in common with Damon (who lovesick Lena has always pined after), Mia’s news leaves her friend group reeling—and Puck’s mind whirling. When they arrive for a week of wedding festivities at an upscale resort in the Appalachian forest, Puck immediately sees that Mia’s marriage will lead to misery, and takes it upon themself to save their friends by rearranging the couples—without anyone finding out. But as Puck comes up against a type-A maid of honor hell-bent on making this wedding happen, it becomes clear that they will have to deliver the greatest stunt of their career. If only they can take their eyes off the bridesmaid. After all, the course of true love never did run smooth…

Written with Samantha Allen’s signature charm, wit, and an irresistible dose of Shakespearian mischief, Puck is the ultimate romcom for our chaotic era, and a celebration of the friendships that carry us through it all.

🍸🚪 Giovanni’s Room - James Baldwin JFC. Americans should never go to Europe indeed. That monologue in the fourth chapter was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever read. 10/10 David is such a bum
Baldwin's haunting and controversial second novel is his most sustained treatment of sexuality, and a classic of gay literature. In a 1950s Paris swarming with expatriates and characterized by dangerous liaisons and hidden violence, an American finds himself unable to repress his impulses, despite his determination to live the conventional life he envisions for himself. After meeting and proposing to a young woman, he falls into a lengthy affair with an Italian bartender and is confounded and tortured by his sexual identity as he oscillates between the two.

Examining the mystery of love and passion in an intensely imagined narrative, Baldwin creates a moving and complex story of death and desire that is revelatory in its insight.

❤️💙 This is How You Lose The Time War - Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone Wasn’t my intention to read two time traveling romances in a row but here we are! Had to read it twice to figure out what was going on but the prose is easily digestible. My favorite parts were early banter b/w Red and Blue.
From award-winning authors Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone comes an enthralling, romantic novel spanning time and space about two time-traveling rivals who fall in love and must change the past to ensure their future.
Among the ashes of a dying world, an agent of the Commandment finds a letter. It reads: Burn before reading.
Thus begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents hellbent on securing the best possible future for their warring factions. Now, what began as a taunt, a battlefield boast, becomes something more. Something epic. Something romantic. Something that could change the past and the future.
Except the discovery of their bond would mean the death of each of them. There’s still a war going on, after all. And someone has to win. That’s how war works, right?
Cowritten by two beloved and award-winning sci-fi writers, This Is How You Lose the Time War is an epic love story spanning time and space

⚔️📝 The Everlasting - Alix E. Harrow What I expected: Time travel fantasy with a cool lady knight!! What I got: Fascist regimes will weaponize a romanticized and fabricated past in order to control the future. Also cool time loops and hot lady knights.
Sir Una Everlasting was Dominion’s greatest hero: the orphaned girl who became a knight, who died for queen and country. Her legend lives on in songs and stories, in children’s books and recruiting posters—but her life as it truly happened has been forgotten.

Centuries later, Owen Mallory—failed soldier, struggling scholar—falls in love with the tale of Una Everlasting. Her story takes him to war, to the archives—and then into the past itself. Una and Owen are tangled together in time, bound to retell the same story over and over again, no matter what it costs.

But that story always ends the same way. If they want to rewrite Una’s legend—if they want to tell a different story--they’ll have to rewrite history itself.
