PhD: three years research into why you don't need to understand your own dissertation. Let's face it: aren't we basically here already?

Yea, PG has always been a tech-freak. So I'd bet the digital formats are in general better for his stuff. (I don't have these recent heavy (double?) vinyl reissues - probably should get them.) Digital things appeared in the late 70s. I'd say that all vinyl before that is consistently a good choice.

Yes. And also the actual pressing (and you personal set up etc.). Especially nowadays - the past 20 yrs or so - there can be big variations in the same pressing runs. The amounts produced are (often) so tiny that producing reliably constant quality is difficult. Or this is how I feel in any case.

Yes, but.. *Sometimes it's also about the actual sound. But this varies a lot. Take Peter Gabriel, for example. For some reason, his quite recent film music *picture disc* sounds awesome - significantly better than the CD (which I also have). But his latest album is the opposite, weirdly.

Happiness is plummeting, especially among young people. When I see demoralizing data like this over and over again (e.g., test scores dropping, loneliness on the rise, etc), I just think we need to change course. Defending the status quo seems like such a bad option.

I've never understood how/why dynamical systems theory is supposed to, by default, somehow non-representationalist/non-computationalist. *All real/concrete systems are dynamical systems. Surely *some of these are representational and/or computational. The whole thing seems like a false dichotomy.

Fun fact: Procol Harum's A Whiter Shade of Pale is the most played song in public places in the UK. I reckon basically everybody in their 50s have heard the song. But at least I'm surprised about its huge popularity. (Not suggesting it's not well-deserved.)

I want to hear more about this "testing by betting"! But: (one of) the problem(s) here is that the HD method is experimental. Sure, some social science fits this. But how about maths, philosophy, history, gender studies..? Perhaps these are not *science? Okay, but they are not pseudoscience either.

I'd like to hear (from Daniel) what kind of advances with respect to the HD method we have made in the past 30 yrs so; I've thought the idea is old & not really discussed. With regards to (4), the HD method is experimental, leaving out the theoretical/human/social/etc. sciences. We need to say more.

Funding research through institutional funding could also include a review component, to fight nepotism/biases/Matthew Effect. Some biases would no doubt remain, but one would just have to weigh this against the current situation where resources are clearly being waste on the application processes.

I'm not sure what this amounts to (do elaborate). I'm basically fine with saying that: the scientific method = the hypothetico-deductive method. However: (1) This is rarely clearly stated. (2) The HD method need elaboration. (3) Many are critical of the method. (4) It does not fit many fields.

The ad says that you'll learn to "understand the scientific method". I find statements like this problematic. What on earth is this method that unites all of science, demarcates it from non/pseudoscience, and leads to glorious "scientific knowledge"? Announcements like this simply promise too much.

Tuomas Pernu @tuomaspernu.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Okay, good. I suppose it's something along these lines (the hypothetico-deductive method, that is). However, not only do people struggle to spell this out clearly, it has to be supplemented in many ways. Moreover: a lot of (perfectly good) things in science/academia do not follow this method.

My point exactly! These people would also be a great asset to the departments & unis. The unis are already paying shitloads to the publishers. Why not create a system where this money (some of it at least) is being diverted back to the departments? It's a win-win!
